Thought this place was just okay. Came here for dinner the other night, no wait for a table of 6 so that part was good. However the food and service were weak, I ordered the Shepard's Pie and and it was really oily and lacked flavor; I would never order again. Other people had burgers and club sandwiches which they seemed to enjoy. Our server barely paid any attention to us, had to get silverware and most of our beers from the bartender, then she messed our check up like 2 times. Although it was not a great review I would probably go back only because I do like Irish pubs, but maybe it will be just for beer.

Something for everyone. McGinty's bottom floor s a great place to chill with a small group or just sit with a pint and engage the locals. The top floor bar is a good place to catch some sports including but not limited to hurling and rugby, or bring a larger casual group. The dining room is good place to sit for a meal. The food is very good. The Guinness stew is great. I suggested they add Stew Fries to the menu but I don't think they have. At any rate getting a stew and some fries will make you happy. But hands down the best menu item they have is the wings. These are wings perfected. I'm a wing man. I've had wings all over the world. I've had wings in Buffalo. These McGinty's wings are the best wings Iv'e ever had. The sauce has just the right amount of spice that builds as you eat. The wings are dry on the outside (as opposed to rubbery) and moist on the inside. Get a bunch of napkins and an extra bleu cheese and go to town. Some people complain about the bartenders. Many of the barkeeps are Irish and as I learned in Ireland you do have to give them a holler if you want something. So don't be shy to yell out a drink order from down the bar.

I really like McGintys, I used to bring my parents here when I lived in Silver Spring. The mussels appetizer and the fried green tomatoes are a must. DELICIOUS. However, as far as being a good "pub," nahhh. The specials aren't great and it's not an exciting crowd. Food yes, drinks no.

Much as I loved the warm embrace and basement milieu that is the magnificent Quarry House ( You are the Quarry (House)) last night, I was with a Steeler fan and he needed to find football bad - so we came here. Another place I had not been too. Another place that from the outside you think, Jesus Christ, not another bloody corporate Irish bar in a freaking mall. But you know what - although some corporations are inherently evil, some are forces for good, and any corporation whose mission is to deliver beer to the masses in an efficient and acceptable way gets my two thumbs up of approval. Walk in the door- host and hostess standing there to welcome us. " we're just here to watch TV" "Oh - you need to go upstairs - more TVs up there" " but what about that big wide screen TV right there in front of the bar with the empty seats in front of it - can't we sit there?" " you better off upstairs - more TVs - go upstairs now I tell you - go upstairs now!!" So, obediently, like the drones in Millgram's 37, we follow our instructions from the figure of authority and reluctantly go upstairs. What we find up there is a massive room with some depressed guy playing a guitar and singing the saddest fucking songs you ever heard. I mean Jesus Christ. The only good Irish music is the happy music - that's the music we play at funerals and wakes - you do not play the hecking sad music until about 2am when everyone is wasted and crying anyway. So we gird our loins and go back down for the confrontation with the hostess: " you can't make us go up there -there is some depressed hecker up there with a guitar - it's bloody dangerous" Finally a smile from Miss Bloody Gretchen Wilomena Kraus ( Buehler, anyone, anyone?) and we sit at the bar. Then three beautiful wonderful things happen: 1. I am served a pint of Guinness that is as good as any I have ever had anywhere, and I realise that's what good corporations do - deliver a quality consistent product. I have spent so much of my life taking notes on what bars you get good Guinness in and what bars it is shite - it is so refreshing to know that nowadays quality is almost - almost - uniformly good everywhere - at least uniformly good in the corporate Oirish McNasty bars. 2. The Smiths come on. YES. There are fewer greater pleasures in this world than struggling through the cold night to get to a bar, finally finding the place you want to be in, letting that first sip of beer hit the back of the throat and then magically your favourite music in the entire universe comes on. Further proof that God loves me and wants me to be happy and has actually constructed this whole universe around me. 3. I look around and realize what a cool, diverse, collected clientele this bar has. Respect to Silver Spring. Many funky, original, beautiful people there. A good bar, a good beer, good music and a good friend. Jesus I was so happy.

Irish soda bread is good and the lamb stew is very good, add a pint of your favorite brew and it works for me. The place is a little pricey and the atmosphere is lacking, but the food is generally very good.

I live in downtown Silver Spring so my boyfriend and I come here pretty frequently. All the people that think Mcginty's is so fake Irish and lacking character should be made aware that the owners are straight off the boat from Ireland, and that a lot of people work there are actually Irish, accents and all. My boyfriend is super personable and has made friends with basically the entire staff so I really enjoy them. I don't mind that it's not packed because packed bars are annoying, I actually enjoy going there with a bunch of my own friends and being able to have a good time. A lot of their food is amazing, and a lot of it the chef just over complicates, but for the most part I really like it and I think Mcginty's is pretty sick, definitely better than Austin Grill or Ceviche.

It's all good at McGinty's. Usually hate corporate places, but the Irish Soda Bread made everything better. They pour a decent pint as well.

Good for Drinks not for Food. Good selection of beers, even have Bulmers/Magners on tap. The food is all frozen, canned, and not Irish. The company is good and they show rugby and soccer games.

todays update: Met a friend for lunch and he picked McGinty's. He got the Reuben and loved it! Said it was the best Reuben he had in 15 years. I had the Salmon BLT and enjoyed it. The slight saltiness of the salmon was complimented by the bacon. Yummy! And I would get it again.

I come here for trivia on Monday evenings on occasion. I think they have a good happy hour menu for food which tastes pretty good. I especially like the fish and chips, or for the cheaper version, the fish bites and chips. The old menu had a lot more happy hour options and it is sad they don't offer the buffalo chicken sandwich anymore except late at night. But, I still think they have one of the more fun trivia options in the area and the food is good. Although... there is a waitress who is really slow. I prefer the waiters.

Some of the best convos I've had over the past year has been in this establishment. It's a low-key Irish pub that has an outdoor seating area ideal for later night chats. While it has all the basics necessary to make it a working pub (brews, etc.), I was pleasantly surprised (and rather shocked, honestly) to see an Amarula Martini on the menu. Amarula is a South African liquor that reminds me of Bailey's but has the scent of vanilla and others that I can't place. It's superb, and I never thought I'd find it here in the States (only other place I've seen it is in Zambia). If you're at McGinty's, fight off the stigma of ordering a girly-sounding martini and give this a go - you won't be sorry!

Just got back from a late dinner at this place and was pleasantly surprised. It is located in that weird little area that is downtown Silver Spring right across from Borders and has a nice outdoor seating area. I had a glass of wine, carrot curry soup and a Caesar salad. My boyfriend had the veggie burger. Both of us were very happy with our meals which were served promptly and presently very nicely, especially for pub food. I would eat here again.

When McGinty's first opened I was excited to see what Silver Spring was going to get in the way of an irish bar. I have to admit my first visit was very disappointing - primarily because the place is just so lacking in character. The downstairs is strangely laid out, while the upstairs is split between a more formal sit-down resturant (with a faux cottage look) and a cavernous sports bar/music venue. It lacked nooks where one can escape into a good conversation, and was devoid of that cozy feel that comes with an irish pub. While I realize that Fado is perhaps the equivalent of letting Disney design an Irish Pub, at least it has a certain warmth to it that is greatly lacking from McGinty's. Flash forward a couple of years and I've now been to McGinty's a number of times. Has the character of the place improved? No, not really, I'm still disappointed whenever I see the inside. However the food is surprisingly good for pub food (better than the Dubliner on Mass Ave), the service is friendly, and the drink selection is fine. I have to admit I don't go for the live music - just gets in the way of conversation -- but they do seem to put on a lot of bands. The restaurant part upstairs is a bit odd in that it feels too formal to be in a pub. Food choices - go for one of their salads, the burger or the Fish 'n Chips (the half portion is actually quite satisfying and doesn't leave you feeling greasy). Bottom line - the food is the surprising star of this less than cozy irish pub. A complete re-design of the inside would go a long way to making this a great local watering-hole.

We come here for volleyball since it's our designated bar. The service is pretty lousy and the food doesn't really make up for it and the live music is either way too loud or way too shitty. The other night we were told we couldn't play drinking games even though its a social league and every bar that my kickball/softball teams have ever gone to allows flip cup to be played. It's cool though...from now on we're just gonna spend our usual weekly $300-400 at another bar.

Decent prices and music. Can't beat the location in the heart of downtown Silver Spring, and its ambiance doesn't match that of the surrounding franchise restaurants. My friend found a bug in her drink but the staff handled it well. We'll come back again.

  • Jay C.

Let me start by saying... if i'm in downtown SS, I DO NOT go here. food isn't good and over priced, same goes for drinks. Not much more to say. There are a lot of better options in that area, so there's no reason to come here. The only reason why I'd go back would be for a last resort on St Patty's day. is there a 1.5 stars or something like that?

  • Benjamin S.

I've been coming here for more than two years. I've seen them come and I've seen them go. I've seen the unmentionable and I've seen the talk of the night. I've come here on good nights and on bad nights. I also have worked in the restaurant and hospitality industry for over ten years. I know when I a customer has a choice and a lack of options. I know when a business needs to limit its clientele or when they can let in even the newest of 18yo on the scene, be it military or not. I come and I go. But, on the one special night, my birthday, I seem to think that the bar that I have paid the rent for one month, the electric bill for another, the bartender's drunken/drug habits, or the chef's cooking school monthly tuition, should owe me at least a thank you. Nope! Not tonight, on my 35th birthday. Low key, but the bartender knew. I get the check for every drink ( I won't stress on what I've experienced or seen these bartenders do in the past), I pay and leave a usually 20% tip on a rather expensive bill for a rinky dink 'Irish' pub. Not a "hanks". Not an "I appreciate it". And, not even a "Happy Birthday". ZERO appreciation. Now, instead of it being a lack of options, it will be a choice. A choice to not return to McGinty's, a choice to spend my money elsewhere, and a choice to inform the community of the type of establishment McGinty's really is. I feel sorry for the next minor that sets foot in that place, the next drug dealer that nonchalantly hangs out at he bar, the unsuspecting tourist that could have got a drink for half as much at a bar twice as good. I've had my fill of downtown Silver Spring. My patience has been tried and I have finally learned my lesson. Silver Spring, especially McGinty's (Public House) does not cater to one that that would like to make an informed decision, but to one that has no other option...By the way, folks, go to New York City and see what a real Irish pub is about!!!

I really wish I felt comfortable giving McGintys a better rating, but alas I cannot. I feel like it is a strange black hole that vacuums in all the aholes in the silver spring area. Everytime I go there the staff is surly, someone trying to pick a fight with my husband, or I get confused as to whether or not I can smoke outside in their little outside seating area. (Sometimes it's OKAY, then It's not, then it's OKAY again). Their beer varies in price too, depending on the bartender. All in all though, my personal experience hasn't been nearly as bad as my husbands, but BECAUSE I am with my husband whenever he has a bad experience there, I am ultimately affected.

A nice place to be seen in Silver Spring, right on the pedestrian walkway. Pretty good food, a bit pricey, but you're paying for the outdoor seating. The smoked fish appetizer was really nice. Fish&chips has a great homemade tartar sauce. Service really efficient (even on a Saturday night).

Ill first start off by saying McGintys is a place to feel welcome. The food speaks for itself....DELICIOUS. You can tell by the quality of food that their kitchen staff works hard to create hearty yummy dishes. The staff is accomidating to patrons an will try their hardest to service their guests. I have seen on numerous occasions staff running up their 30 something stairs to double check with the chef for food allergy/ ingredient questions always ensuring a "safe meal" for me to enjoy:) The bartenders are friendly and love taking a minute to chat...on different occasions when i just stop in for a pint or im waitng for friends the bartenders will strike up conversation to pass the time:) Ive been told by staff that they've worked there since the establishment opened and alot of their staff has been there for years! That says something about what kind of place it is...:) Knowing the owners, I can tell you this is a close knit group of people who take pride in keeping this pub a 5 star joint. I really hope this review helps and seals the deal for an on the fence reader.

Very good food and excellent atmosphere. Been here several times and the food is always reliable. The basic fish & chips is crispy and tasty, although a little on the pricey side at around $15. The salads are great too with fresh ingredients and not too much dressing. Beer here is great with good selections. This restaurant has a few "sections" with two upstairs--it gives the impression that the owners are still trying to figure out what to do with these two sections, one being a more sit-down white table cloth area and the other being a roadhouse type bar and stage area. There is also a small (actually only about 5 tables) section outside with very limited and popular seating during good weather. Overall worth the trip for the food and drink despite the crazy layout of seating.

Okay, so after some time in Boston, we were sorely missing the local pub. You may be thinking: an Irish pub in downtown Silver Spring, across from the DSW shoe warehouse?? I thought the same. However, if you ignore all that, it's really not that bad. The service is not great, but if you go in expecting it to be bar service, it's fine. They say that the actual restaurant, supposedly a bit nicer and more up-scale, is upstairs. However, I've always sat downstairs in the bar area. It's a bit shocking to open the menu and see things like "pan roasted Alaskan salmon" next to fish 'n chips, but it's there. When I'm in a pub mood, I tend to stay away from the salmon in favor of the less healthy options, and I can say they have a good reuben, and a very good hamburger and fries. I would pass on the Boxty, but the Irish soda bread they bring out prior to the meal is quite tasty (although you may have to remind the waiter to bring it). There are also quite a few tables outside, but those were always full when I was there. If you're in the downtown Silver Spring area and are trying to avoid the chain restaurants, McGinty's is a pretty fun place. (Oh, and Monday is trivia night, and sometimes they have live music.)

The people of Ireland versus McGinty's Shitty McShit is now in session. All rise. Your Honor, We the people of Ireland (and by we, I mean them) would like to charge McGinty's Shitty McShit with 3 zillion counts of defamation of character. /Bad Joke. Honestly, this is one of the worst, if not THE worst meals I've ever been forced to endure. If I were Food, I'd come over and bitch slap McGinty for doing me sooooo bad. Nasty, nasty, nasty, nasty, nasty, nasty times infinity. Not only nasty, but incredibly over priced for the shit they are shitting out onto a plate and charging you to eat. What de hell? $24 for an entree? McGinty, I believe you have mistaken yourself for a real restaurant with real food. Nothing on your menu should be more than $8. Uggggg. Get back in your car and drive far far away.

Hmmmm is there a reason this place is never packed?? Or even somewhat crowded? I have never had a problem getting a seat at the bar, so why am I complaining? Maybe its because it is always SO boring!! This bar is a mystery to me because the decor is nice, they have pontential for a good atmposphere. They have a bar upstairs and downstairs, plus outdoor seating during the warmer months, a nice dining room, live bands, etc.... but it is ALWAYS empty!! The food here is mediocre at best, athough I do think it has improved since they first opened, but I wouldn't come here to eat. In fact I really don't know why I come here at all. I usually find my way here for one last drink after dinner at one of the other down town Silver Spring restaurants. I dont know I never stay long, and I always find myself ready for bed after visiting this bar......

When I used to live in Silver Spring this was my go to place. Live music, decent happy hour, and great central location. If there was live music, usually on the weekend, the cover isn't too bad.

Went on a Tues night and it was pretty dead, but that was fine with us, as we just spent the day whittling balsa into knitting needles to send to Uganda. The service was slow, but the beers where poured well, were cold, and a good selection was available - the top choice (IMHO) being Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. The food was good - I ordered a very tasty goat cheese salad, while my whittling friend enjoyed a rueben with his fries. The waiter had a fake Irish accent, which was weird and rather annoying. It was quite obvious he was from the local area, besides - ALL Irishmen have red hair and big red beards! This place is nothing special, but a good option for downtown SS.

  • Jason B.

If Silver Spring didn't have a dearth of pubs (thank you MoCo for your facacta liquor laws), this place would not be as popular as it is. It's a poser Irish pub at best and only succeeds because there is no competition and there are suburbanites who might not want to deal with Quarry House. The food is okay (the wings and crab dip in particular) and if McGinty's gave up the faux Irish charade they'd probably earn an extra star.

  • Robbie M.

The food was good for bar food and the portions are good size. They need more wit staff in the bar area as our waitress was so busy we had to flag her a number of times. She was very good and attentive to our requests.

This joint is OK. The Guinness is good and this is the only place outside of Dublin that I have seen curry fries. Get them. The atmosphere is a bit Mikey McMouse, but that's to be expected considering the locale. It's a good place to kill time with a pint or three while your wife browses DSW or Ulta. On weekend nights it gets too post-collegiate and sloppy for my tastes. I'm a professional drunk and annoy easily, though. I haven't eaten there in some time as I think the food went crap, but who knows, it may have recovered. But again, get the curry fries. They go well with any type of booze. If it's a more genuine across-the-pond atmosphere you're after, try the Royal Mile in Wheaton.

Trivia Monday nights at 7pm are fun. The host was really nice about it and let us join in even though we were over an hour late for it. There was a picture round and even a music round that we totally aced. (Yay secret power moves!) Tuesdays was half priced burger nights up in the pub, though wasn't anything special. Haven't tried any their other food. Just been there at their upstairs pub and have always had a good time. Service was always nice and usually there's some special or another going on.

They have decent happy hour specials and the chicken tenders and fries were pretty damn amazing. Beer was cheap and the atmosphere was lively but not too noisy.

Service was AWESOME! We were greeted by our server within 30 seconds of sitting down in the downstairs bar area. We had drinks 2 minutes after that, and food within another 10 minutes. He was very friendly and made sure to check on us frequently. Happy hour quesadilla was small, but the buffalo wing basket was very tasty! I think our server's name was Max, but I'm not positive. This was my 10th or so time there and I've always had a great time. Highly recommended!

Ambiance is amazing. The staff is Irish, the place feels Irish, and the menu is Irish with a hint of American. However, the food is just decent and it's overpriced quite a bit. Without a doubt, the bartender hasn't been trained in the proper way to poor a Guiness. Go for a drink, not the food.

This is a great place in downtown Silver Spring if you are looking for a decent pint that sometimes has some very good bands (other times the bands have been less than very good). The food is decent, it's not spectacular, but it definitely isn't bland or disappointing either. I have been here a number of times with friends, and I am thrilled that they have a good irish cider. All in all, it's not my favorite place in Downtown Silver Spring, but it definitely isn't a bad spot either.

This is the biggest Irish pub I've ever seen. They have trivia in just one area of the bar, there were over ten teams, and the place still felt like it was mostly empty. Huge. I was there for their trivia night and it was decent, but not among my favorites. It was kinda hard to hear the questions in the large space with iffy acoustics and the trivia host really could have done a better job of keeping it rolling. We did manage to win the drawing for the consolation prize even though we didn't win anything through our mad trivia skills. Really can't complain about the beer selection or the prices. I only had the calamari, which was pretty good. McGinty's is a solid three in my book. Not quite great, but a place I'd come back to, especially since the other options in the area seem to be Red Lobster and Macaroni Grill.

The service at first wasn't really good which made me kind of wanting to leave but afterwards it got a little better. i do have to say the food was delicious!!! i order wings and i been craving them again since i went. i also order a sandwich and it was really goo!!

Still a fan after a night of trivia....in which we placed 6th. Next time, Team Schizo, next time. This time I actually got to try the Veggie burger that my roommates made look so tasty and I have to say it was in fact the tastiest veggie burger I have yet to have in my mouth. Masticating it was a pleasure. It was served warm on a kaiser roll bun with caramelized onions, lettuce, pesto mayo and perfected with a side of pickle spear. We got the bread pudding (all that trivia made me hungry!) and it hit the spot. Warm bread pudding with a cream sauce and strawberry drizzle, little pieces of strawberry on top of the whip cream apex was just what I had in mind. Well, the taste was; I didn't actually picture the bread pudding because I'm not clairvoyant. Like Zach G. said, the trivia questions were hard to hear, but I would prefer to come here to watch one of the local bands or just to hang out. Maybe I'd do trivia again if we got a closer table.

Boyfriend and I met up the pastor and his wife here for lunch on a Friday afternoon. I've never been to a pub to EAT before. We sat outside so I can't say much for the interior. I did see on the way to the ladie's room that there was a huge bar and an area to play darts. The Potato and Leek soup was on point. I think I would have probably enjoyed it more if we were seated inside, away from the blazing heat. The Turkey Croissant I ordered was just way too big. I could barely finish half of it. It was LOADED with turkey. My little mouth had a hard time taking bites out of it. I got to steal a taste of the boyfriend's Shepherd's Pie and it was delicious! I would definitely order this if we come back.

You know, when I wrote this I was a grumpy bastard. I'm not a grumpy bastard any more. And with time I've come to really like McGinty's. So what if it's in suburbia? Dear self: chillax brov! They have Guinness!

Cavernous and sprawling inside, this pub boasts two floors and multiple bars, providing enough space to host live bands, trivia nights and dance partys without encroaching on the space of guests that want nothing to do with the events. The food is decent pub fare, with a limited bar menu after the dining rooms close down, but still offering enough of a variety to make it worthwhile. Their fish and chips is awesome, light and crispy without too much grease. It seems that they have some type of event going on each night. The hilarity of watching a "DJ Swing Dance Party" from the sidelines was great entertainment while we downed cold beers waiting for our grub. The staff was attentive, even late on a Sunday. . Overall, I wouldnt say this place would be my regular bar even if it were closer to my house. There is something a little too commercial about it, maybe its just the massive size that takes away the pub-like feel, despite the typical pub decor compensation. That being said, they do handle the size of the place fairly well, as there are multiple rooms to break up the space. At the end of the day, not too shabby for a convenient place to get a beer and some food pre or post movie at the SS town center theater.

We only tried McGinty's because nothing else was open. The food was actually quite good, if a little too pricey. We had the fish and chips and the bangers and mash. Surprisingly delicious. Can't speak to the bar as i only had dinner.

I've had better, but there are some good happy hour specials. The trivia night seems to draw an older crowd than that of Quarry House. It seems to be a good spot for long-time regulars; if you're a newbie, embrace your gentrifying self by going to another establishment.

My go-to bar in downtown Silver Spring. I'm a wino, and they actually have a surprisingly good wine selection for a beer place. Good food and good atmosphere too. I've enjoyed myself every time I've been here, and I've probably been 4-5 times.

McGinty's is a short 5 minute walk from the Silver Spring Metro stop. After leaving the movie theater I decided to stop in here for a drink. I've been wanting to check it out for a while. It was around 5:00pm and we sat outside. It was a great spot to people watch as it's in the middle of downtown Silver Spring next to tons of restaurants and shops. They made us pretty strong drinks, and after 2 I got a bit peckish. I'm always skeptical of bar/pub food. We order french fries and mussels. They were both good. It's a casual place. The staff is very friendly, helpful, and attentive. I would certainly go there again. .

A five star trivia place? Have I gone mad? No one has received a coveted five star review for a trivia game/restaurant in ten weeks and I'm proud to announce that McGinty's is that place. (Note: Madam's Organ would've got that distinction if it wasn't for the complaints in my review. Good luck next time MO :D.) McGinty's had four different areas to eat/drink and each area had it's own unique feel and atmosphere (four?!). There was the outside patio area, the downstairs bar, an "upper-class" dining area on the top floor and the upstairs bar. The downstairs bar had a nice more "sporty" feel to it and I would love to be down here for a football (American or rest of the world) game/match. I didn't get to spend really any time in any of the areas except for the upstairs bar so my review will mainly cover this part of the restaurant. The upstairs bar has the most open area of any bar I've been too. There are a lot of high bar tables as well as half booths all around the walls. They have live music here so they have a stage located in the back corner set up with audio equipment. Like most Irish pubs, it followed the decor of a lot of wood paneling (the bar itself, etc.). However, they had flat panel TVs all around the area so you can catch up on the latest sports scores. The wait staff/trivia host were incredibly friendly. Our waitress came around frequently and Eric (the trivia host) came around and hobnobbed with all of the trivia teams throughout the night and kindly explained all of the rules to us before the game. I haven't seen a trivia host mingle with the teams and keep the game going at a great pace. Excellent job! Moreover, they had the best prizes (swag) besides just having the normal money off your beer/food tab. The game itself was a standard Pub Quiz game except that they only offered six rounds instead of seven. Nice touch as the game never seemed to drag on. They offer quite a few beers on tap. Even though that was the case, our table of eight only ordered Boddington's and Smithwick's. (EDIT: I was reminded that a few of us took advantage of their $3.00 Yuengling special.) I do have to say that they do have the best mozzarella sticks. Ever. Looking back, I'm surprised I didn't really eat anything else. Check this place out. It's fun and it offers a little bit of everything for everyone. UPDATE: How can I forget to mention that we actually won something! We got fourth, but we got $15.00 off because we were randomly selected from the losing teams! Exciting! img.photobucket.com/albu… Above pic from left to right: Keely R., Kathleen M., Ryan S. McGinty's was my first foray into the nightlife of Silver Spring. I can't say that Silver Spring is my new hangout, but I definitely wouldn't be surprised if I decide to come back to this area.... especially because of that bangin' Marimekko trench I saw in the window of the gorgeous Marimekko store down the street, really close to the DSW. Ok, sorry, this review is about McGinty's, which seems to be a great addition to this area. They've got outdoor seating and two huge bar areas. The upstairs space is gigantic, complete with a stage. Seating was comfortable and everything was laid out well with a very open and massive feel-- I liked it. The drink specials were pretty good and they had lots of option on tap like any good Irish pub should. The food was pretty good, especially the bread pudding! Our server was a little slow at times but still did a good job overall. The trivia was a lot of fun with a good mix of questions along with picture and audio rounds. In addition to the typical prizes (money toward bar tab) for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd placed teams, the quizmaster provided all sorts of swag for random prizes throughout the night. He had everything from typical beer promotion stuff (mugs, teeshirts, beltbuckles, etc.) to bouncy balls, mardi gras beads, and a barrel of monkeys. Apparently people are invited to bring in their own junk to give away, which was pretty sweet. There were obviously some regulars for this trivia: always a good sign. The yelpers managed to get 4th place, as usual. Through a random drawing we also ended up with $15 off our tab! Woo! The trivia was well paced throughout the night with only the occasional lull. I'd definitely recommend it.

First off, it's usually a shorter Metro trip to Silver Spring from Judiciary Square than it is to await the train on the platform (non-rush hour of course). With that off my chest, McGinty's proved to be a decent spot in the new mecca that is Silver Spring! This place is huge! Outdoor seating, downstairs, upstairs, bars, tables, you name it! There's something for everyone. I will say that of the previous Yelp Trivia nights I've attended, I expected to not easily find the Yelp group in the place, but as I ascended upstairs, I was surprised to see a fairly empty space. I guess Monday night trivia hasn't quite hit the prime time in Silver Spring. All happy hour beers on tap were $4 except for Guinness, and although the pub food menu didn't appear to be discounted for trivia night, it wasn't expensive and not bad at all. Kathleen and I had chicken fingers and fries. Three plump chicken strips were tasty, maybe a tad more fried crust that I prefer, but not greasy at all. Oh, it was served with a trio of sauces, ketchup, BBQ and honey mustard for you dipping pleasure. Trivia was fun, especially the 70s music sample round! I must say we did darn good on that one, but it still wasn't enough to place in the top three... but fourth isn't bad... and we were lucky enough to be randomly selected as the luckiest losers and received a $15 dollar off certificate! McGinty's has the space, beer, food and TVs to hold a lot of people quite comfortably. I'm sure game nights must draw in a good crowd. So if you happen to be in Silver Spring, go grab a pint at one the numerous spots outside, inside, upstairs, downstairs or at the bar!

McGinty's is a decent place to hang out, drink some beers and eat a basic meal. I've had appetizers or dinner here several times when I'm meeting friends. The salads are a good bet. Pub food is the usual hit or miss, although I have to say the fish 'n chips is better than average. Good fries. They have live music upstairs frequently. I tend to feel sorry for the bands, though, because the acoustics are horrible. I imagine it has something to do with the cavernous room and the odd layout of the stage (stuck back in the corner), along with concrete floors. Somehow, no matter what band it is, it just ends up sounding LOUD. I CAN'T HEAR YOU LOUD. Covers are also high for the location and the bands. Still, this doesn't stop a sometimes-sizeable crowd from throwing it down on the dance floor. Hence, if you're into people-watching, this can be your spot. Something about several Irish Car Bomb shots gets a body moving, perhaps. I dropped into trivia one night but it was too late to participate. I've never sat outside, which might be fun when it's warm. I usually sit upstairs because that's where my friends tend to end up, but I like the vibe of the downstairs bar much better. I like a smaller, cozier pub environment and the upstairs is more "Irish-style dining hall" (although the bar itself is huge and not a bad spot to hang out.) The bartenders are friendly, no-nonsense types, but I've had some nice table service when it's available. Three stars, relative to other Irish pubs I've loved before.

Unlike Craig, I'm only going to give this place four stars for one small complaint I had during the evening. Other than said complaint, though, McGinty's is a great place to come for the trivia. I opted to drive to Silver Spring, since it would have been a ridiculously long ride for me on the metro, and it was really easy to find. The parking garage in the area also happened to be free after 6 pm, WOO! Trivia starts around 7pm and I happened to arrive there on time! I was surprised at the empty tables in the upstairs bar area, which was large enough to house at least 200 people (I think...all you really need to know is that it was ROOMY). Anyway it took a while for our waitress to see me sitting in the corner, so when she finally came around I took advantage of their $4 beer specials and cheap pub menu. I ordered the chicken fingers which came with three sauces and I fell in love with the BBQ sauce. The trivia host was quite enjoyable and like Kathleen said had all sorts of prizes he gave away over the course of the game. Our trivia team made it to 4th place, and we also received a nifty little g.c. for $15 we used towards our tab. Later in the evening a few of us had ordered some beers and the waitress forgot about them, which I would have let slide if the place had been really busy, but it was no where close. Unfortunately for them that's the reason for the four stars...but I'd honestly be back there for trivia in a heartbeat.

I love this place. It's the classic irish pub feel. I've been here several times and have never been disappointed. Last time there was a celtic band just jamming, they were great! My favorite part is that they have Strongbow on tap, which is always a plus. Fish and chips are great, shepards pie is great, even their burgers are good! The reason I take a star away is because it does get VERY loud, which makes conversation impossible. I try to avoid weekend nights to avoid that situation

  • Ken S.

We really enjoy the food. I've never had a bad meal here and the dishes always taste fresh. My only bad experience was with the staff on one occasion out of perhaps 15. It was late night and we had problems getting anyone to wait on us. Once I complained to the bartender, he took care of everything and made sure we were taken care of. The only reason it's not five stars is it can be a little pricey for the portions, but you will leave satisfied.

Great casual Irish pub to throw back a few brews if you're in the Silver Spring area. It definitely helps this place is one of the few (if not the only) nightly hangouts in the downtown area. One of the few bars worthy enough for me and my UMD buddies.

The Food - I've only had a few items and it is above-par bar food, though the Calamari is real good... The Drinks - As stated, they have a decent selection of draft beer, not to the RFD level, but decent. The mixed drinks are hit or miss depending on the bartender and whether or not you know them. Upstairs and downstairs have two different vibes. Upstairs usually has a band on the weekends (again hit or miss) and numerous flatscreens with games on. There is a ton of room and usually enough space to move around. The staff is attentive and usually gets drinks in a timely fashion. The acoustics aren't that great and the drums seem to overpower everything else in the band. When it is 80s night, the upstairs gets a little crazy. There is usually a cover on weekends. Downstairs is more irish pub-like and a cool place to chill. They usually have on soccer or rugby or some other Irish sport on the TV downstairs when I've been there. Which of course makes sense. There is a patio which could be cool in the summer months. Overall its not a bad place at all and fun for a group

I don't feel it's anything special but it wouldn't be fair to call it bad either. The service is alright, the food is alright, and the drinks are alright. You wont find a proper pint of Guinness anywhere in the states anyway, so if you're caught in silver spring and just want to keep it easy- this could work for you.

    (2)
  • Suzanne A.

Decent prices and music. Can't beat the location in the heart of downtown Silver Spring, and its ambiance doesn't match that of the surrounding franchise restaurants. My friend found a bug in her drink but the staff handled it well. We'll come back again.

    (3)

I've had better, but there are some good happy hour specials. The trivia night seems to draw an older crowd than that of Quarry House. It seems to be a good spot for long-time regulars; if you're a newbie, embrace your gentrifying self by going to another establishment.

This is actually my second visit to McGinty's, the first being a pre-fixe brunch which I thought provided bang for its buck, however, I decided to hold off until I had the opportunity to have a meal on my own terms. The appetizer menu is exquisitely enticing, I wanted to order half of the options so my friend and I decided to go with three appetizers and one entree. We chose the Duck Liver Terrine, Steamed Mussels and the Tuna Tartar. I know what you're thinking, Tuna Tartar at an Irish Pub? Well, honestly I'm a sucker for raw fish and decided to go for it. Big mistake. The tuna was bland, lacked in presentation and the color itself was dull pink that looked only somewhat appetizing. Skip it. The duck liver mousse on the other hand was very flavorful and served with a side of toasted baguettes which provided the necessary texture to really enjoy the dish. The dried apricots also added a sweet and tart dimension to the plate which was a pleasant surprise. The winner of the appetizer round were the Mussels steamed with thyme, shallots, tomato and a white wine butter sauce. The broth was savory and rich and the mussels all but melted in your mouth. We selected a special, Rockfish on a bed of sweet pea risotto and fried zucchini. Mixed reviews at best on this dish . While the risotto and zucchini were executed well, the champion of the dish should have been the Rockfish. Unfortunately it was under seasoned, a bit overcooked and seemed to have been frozen first (just my own speculation). I've had fresh Rockfish several times and it is flaky and rich, which was nothing like what I was served. Lessons learned. Probably not a great idea to have fish (other than maybe fish & chips) at an Irish Pub. I am willing to give it another go, but will order something a bit more traditional like Shepherd's Pie or Corned Beef. The service was just "ok", the food had more lows than highs, nonetheless, I'll be back some time.

Love this place, feels like home. This Irish style pub also has an upscale dining room on the second floor, would be great for private parties or any occasion requiring more of an intimate setting. The menu has many staples-solid Irish pub fare of fish and chips, pies, etc...their more traditionally American items are delish as well. Service as bar and dining is great. We get by here twice a month and the bartenders know our drinks-pretty impressive. We especially love Jared, the bartender who we feel like is a long lost friend! We look forward to all the good times to come at this local fav.

Staying in Silver Spring while on vacation, and I have to say this was a great choice as a first meal here. I had what is arguably the best cheeseburger of my life, and my husband had the corned beef and cabbage. In both of our meals, the meat was perfectly seasoned and cooked to perfection, but still deliciously juicy. We were both very happy with the friendly service, the wonderful atmosphere, and most importantly the food. Even though we are only here for a few days, I would love to go back!

Funny that a topic in Yelp Talk today is cranky reviews because I'm about to get my crank on in this review a bit...and let it be known I've waited almost 3 days to write this review just to make sure I wasn't blowing things out of porpotion for some reason. So R and I come down to downtown Silver Spring this weekend to get him some new work duds at Men's Warehouse. As we are often apt to do we decided that drinks and dinner afterwards would be the plan for the day. We zeroed in on McGinty's because it was nearby but I wound up having to talk R into it a bit because he's not wild about this place. It was maybe our third or forth time here and this last visit may have been the final one. It was mid Saturday afternoon and it was quiet for the most part in the bar area. We plopped down at a table that had some items left over from the previous patrons. One of the servers silently came by and cleaned it up but said nothing related to taking our order or promising to bring over some menus. R and I waited patiently but after at least 5 minutes (and mind you, it wasn't busy here at all), I walked up to the bar to order drinks. Even then it took a few moments to grab the bartender's attention (he was paging through a book). Once he did notice me he took my order and told me that a server would be bringing our beers over. The beers were brought over a moment later. Our server dropped them off and left. No introduction that he would be serving us, or asking if we wanted menus or anything. My Harp wasn't bad. R's been relegated to drinking Heineken from the bottle because he can't find decent draught beer here. We finished our first round and then waited for some time to spot our server to request another round but he was no where to be found. R requested another round from the bartender. Our server showed up with our drinks and apologized. I didn't quite make out what he said but I think he figured we were just serving ourselves. A little while later a new server showed up for his shift and even though we weren't one of his tables he at least checked in on us a time or two which was nice. We ordered dinner here, believe it or not and it wound up being our first time trying any of the food. I tried the cream of crab soup. It was good but I swear I think there were clams or something else in it too. I liked the taste but it gave me terrible indigestion. I also got a club sandwich and it was okay but I've had better. I wouldn't get it again. The fries were excellent though! R had the Shepherd's pie and that was pretty spectacular. Very rich and saucy. I stole quite a few bites of it. McGint'ys is my kind of place; it's comfy and it's a place I would love to hang out at but the service we received the last time we were here has really turned me off. Don't you want customers? Don't you want people to feel comfortable? Whatever happened to hospitality? I felt like a second thought to our server and like a pest to the bartender and that's not how I want to feel when I go out.

Good food, fast, friendly service, and lots of options on the menu--including vegetarian. We sat upstairs since it was a little loud downstairs. Had the chickpea burger with fries, the eggplant napoleon, and kale salad (without the cheese). I have never enjoyed kale so much. I have no idea what they did to it, but it was juicy, 'meaty' and full of flavor. The eggplant was a beautiful appetizer of crispy eggplant layered with vegetable ragout in a tower. It was light and crispy and full of flavor. The fries were great too. The chickpea burger would have been better with some lettuce and tomato, or the promised sauteed mushrooms on top (which they claimed was ground up in the burger, a change from the description in the menu). Only complaint is that they actually charged us 50 cents (each) for a side of mayo and BBQ sauce with the burger. I have never been charged for mayo with a burger. Would have been fine if the waitress just told us we would be charged and that the chickpea burger wasn't going to be as it was described in the menu.

Beautiful establishment, and usually a great menu.. although, I was disappointed for the Potato and Leek soup to go away. Mcginty's is right up my alley, Irish pub grub, good bar and a pretty venue. My issue with McGinty's fell with service and price. One day I'd go to McGinty's and have an amazing server, the next I would have one that hurried me, didn't know the menu or flat out seemed uninterested. I didn't appreciate that. The problems are not enough to put me off McGinty's but it wasn't my go to Irish pub in Maryland when I lived there.

I don't go here for the food...it's average, but the upstairs live band which is a great place to hang out. I've been here three times; twice were for large events. We had a class pre-reunion event here that was great and we also had a work Christmas party here. They had closed the entire upstairs for the Christmas party that had about 300 people. Two of the rooms had buffet style tables set up where people where able to get food and mingle. The main room was were we had a stage where you could dance and a section for the band. It was a very easy place to get to and just a fun place.

Been to this place quite a few times, but never on a weekend. I used to go there when they had a cover band; very interesting show! always kind of a strange crowd. kind of afterworkish/random justseeingwhatthisplaceisish. Half Price burger night at happy hour = cheap yumyness. the layout of the upstairs bar and lack of tv's over the bar make the upstairs area a very strange place to sit or longer than an hour and a half. Cool place to chill with coworkers after you get off of work. Don't think that you will be impressing anyone if you bring them to this spot though!

The food here is very good. It is a mix of Irish and American food. The Chef's specials are especially good. Lunch time is not very crowded but happy hour can be. You do get a good deal during happy hour with $5 appetizers and $4 drink specials. I usually sit at the bar so I can't comment on the wait staff but I have found them to be friendly. The bartenders know their stuff and make very good drinks. There are 3 TVs to watch whatever sport you're interested in. The bar downstairs is cozy and very nice for people watching or when the weather is good, sit out on the patio. There is a large room on the second floor with a long bar and 7 TVs and there is also a big screen. You get there by claiming the stairs. There is a band area and a dance floor. On Fridays there is a DJ. They can be a hit or miss. The night I was there DJ Mills on there. He seems to get everybody's attention. I like him most out of the others that I have heard. On Saturday nights there is a live band and a cover charge. The bands performing 99% of the time are rock and roll. Kind of boring when they all perform the same popular songs. Once and a while you get some people dancing, but it's usually the groupies that come with the band. With the diversity of people in this neighborhood, you'd think there would be more diversity of musical entertainment. But if you are disabled in any way it could be difficult getting to the second floor. If you come in through the mall area and leave before 9pm it's easy. But if you come in from downstairs you are taken through a back door and through a small hallway that leads to the dumpster area and then put on the freight elevator. You are then taken through a storage area and when you come out there you are back into the restaurant. It is easy going up but if you stay until 9pm then you must go back down the same route, that is because the mall area is closed and they don't allow any customers to go out those doors. The only problem is that all the doors you have to go through when you go down are locked so you must wait for someone to open the doors. I don't remember seeing anyone but myself that has stayed for the night entertainment and had to go through that. This could turn off many people. If you like Irish music there is the Irish session on Tuesday nights downstairs. But be prepared they play just Irish music for 3 hours. I think it's traditional and the songs after the first hour begin to sound the same. I would give five stars for the food but I had to subtract 1 star for the entertainment.

I literally come here for one salad (which I pair perfectly with my dry Chardonnay but that's just a bonus) and am scared to try anything else because it is so good! Pleaseeee order the Steak Salad and add shrimp. The grapefruit, arugula, steak, shrimp and dressing with a full half lemon is really everything. They also dress the salad perfectly...no need for any on the side.

The food here has really fallen off. The menu is expanded but the quality is sub par at best. The bangers and mash: the sausages were horrible. Tasted too sweet and like they were filled with gristle. The mash and beans are good but seriously, avoid this dish. The Reuben was ho-hum. 3 stars because the staff is friendly and they have good draft beers and events almost every night. Do not come hungry...

3.25 stars I set the bar rather low for Irish pubs, expecting the food to be edible but rarely mouthwatering. I come for trivia, or the cider, or due to their propensity in DC to be located really close to public transportation. I usually try to order something 'Irish' on the menu (bangers and mash, rashers, guiness stew) but am generally regretful later. Imagine my surprise when, after ordering an Irish Breakfast (the meal, not the tea) at McGinty's I found it to be mostly delicious. The eggs (scrambled) were rich and creamy as eggs should always be and almost never are. The black and white pudding was a little dry but decent and the baked beans were fine. The sausage and mash were pretty good, not overdone at all, and the side of fruit (cantaloupe, grapes) was fresh and not past ripe. Furthermore, our service was impeccable. Tea was served moments after ordering and our waiter was professional and genial in every way. As other reviewers have mentioned, there is a cheese factor to this bar (just check out the events calendar) but this is an Irish pub in MD. It is what it is. If you thought it was going to be really authentic I'll let you in on another little revelation. The Chinese food they serve in the U.S. resembles nothing I've ever seen in Asia. Yes, I know... what a shocker.

The place was allrite. We sat at one of the tables stuck back in a nook near the downstairs bar. Sort of a lame crowd populated the place, but they have a nice selection of beer and a pretty decent set of options on the menu. I had the vegetable strudel, and it was quite tasty. My father-in-law had the shepherd's pie, and he's not an easy guy to please. So for him to say it was really good must mean something. I mean, I guess I'll go back at some point. I probably won't go to hang out at the bar with the sort of numbskulls who populate it (or seemed to that night)\, but if it's a nice day and we're around for lunch I might stop in for a burger and a beer before heading on.

I've hung out here a few times mainly because it's nice to be outside in the summer. I find the interior rather depressing though I must admit I've never chilled on the 2nd floor, only the 1st. Also they have a damn good bruschetta, and I've returned a few times just for that. So after catching the Packers game at a friend's house, I was on my way home and decided to put some greasy grub in my stomach before going to bed. McGinty's is reliable because they have a late-night menu. I sat outside and ordered some onion rings because soaking up alcohol would not be a job for bruschetta. They were cheap and good. I don't drink on school nights generally, but it's kind of hard during football season. Anyway, I had read earlier that day that the Navy used to give drunk shipmen b12 shots to prevent a hangover, and don't you know what's in my drawer at home? So I go home and inject 2000 mcg of b12 before bed, et voila, I feel fine today. Granted I only had about 8-9 beers, but still. No Excedrin needed. May as well of had a nightcap at McGinty's :) Next time, I just may.

Eh, I generally don't like the fake Irish gig much and this place only further drives the nail into that coffin for me. They don't make up for their generic design and idea with an awesome beer selection, good food, or great service. You won't get poured a heavy shot, you won't have great conversation with the bar tenders; it's a Bro bar for wannabe Irish Bros. I have given this place ample chance to secure at least a semi-warm place in my heart but alas, it is an impossibility. The food: -Has tasted different every time I have visited. Their burger was good 1 out of 6 times. The Service: -Equivalent to TGI Fridays. -Bartenders don't seem cool or approachable. Music: -they do have some cool cover bands that the baby boomers rock out to, and that at times, can be worth showing up to see. This place doesn't represent a Public House at all, it's just a money making bar.

Love this place! Always welcoming, best corned beef ever, the Ruben is heaven on rye! If your half friendly they treat you like royalty! The downstairs is a little pub with darts and a bar perfect for the game and outside is always an option. If you want privacy they have lots of corner booths for you to choose from. The shepherd pie is my second favorite item on the menu, if you like wings this is the place no skimpy ones here nice big ones with lots of coatings to choose from but be careful of the hottest or be ready with some icecream to cut the heat! Something for everyone is what I've found here! Talk to the staff a few have the Irish accent and it's to die for! It's someplace I will always return to. Keep up the great work!

Ever since moving to Silver Spring a year ago, McGinty's has become one of our favorite spots. We come here once every month or two, and always get the same thing: Fish and chips. It's the best either my girlfriend or I have ever had, and it's consistently good. The fish fillets are the biggest I've ever seen for this dish (about 10 inches long), and the beer batter is divine. The tartar sauce tastes homemade, and is also the best I've had. The first time we came here we had something different, which was equally as good (crab cakes and shepherd's pie), but ever since the first bite of fish and chips, all bets are off. The service can be hit-or-miss, mainly in waiters not being as attentive because they have a lot of customers. It's not that big of an annoyance, though, but definitely something to note if you're the type of person to be bothered by that. Recently they opened up a mediterranean restaurant *inside* of McGinty's in a spot that used to be a spare dining room. It's kind of awkward to walk by, and cuts down on the seating available for McGinty's customers. We haven't tried it, and probably won't, because if we're inside, we'll want to stick with the great Irish food. Next time you're in downtown Silver Spring and are greeted by the thousands of restaurants per square block, make a point of stopping here - you'll enjoy it.

Getting some food after a movie in Silver Sprung can be problematic - most places are closed or about to be. And besides keeping bar hours, McGinty's is right across the street from the theater. There are three seating areas: sidewalk, downstairs, and upstairs. I went to the bar downstairs, pub style without trying too hard, and ordered a pint of Smithwicks, one of my favorite brews, and the Irish Breakfast. Very nice protein loading - three kinds of sausage, eggs, some delightfully smoky gammon (that would be rasher on the menu, it's lean cured pork much like Canadian bacon), straight up mashed potatoes garnished with home made chips, grilled tomato, and beans. Tasty, stick to the ribs meal, my only gripe is that I'm pretty sure the beans came out of that familiar red and white can. And while I enjoyed the classic rock in the background, it didn't fit the rest of the atmosphere. I've had pub grub in England, and this was on point. Friendly service, honest prices, all the Irish classics on the menu, and signs for an upscale restaurant-within-a-restaurant upstairs. If it's as good as they claim I'll be adding Gastropub to their categories.

I honestly stopped in just to get a drink with a friend and was blown away when I ordered this signature salad. The McGinty Salad was sweet & savory with a healthy mix of red cabbage, lettuce and some Romaine. I think the sliced grapes were a nice light and tasty touch for a how summer day. Out bartender was very attentive with the drink refills. I'll admit I went during a slow lunch hour, but I could still see the charm of this little pub in Silver Spring.

I stopped by here for breakfast after church. I really wanted to love this spot. The ONLY reason they got two stars was because they provide excellent customer service! The staff was amazing. I also loved their home fries. However, I was very disappointed in the food. I felt like I was eating cafeteria food - that had been siting in a metal pan container for awhile. The crab cake Eggs Benedict was salty - probably the worst Eggs Benedict I've ever had. The egg wasn't even runny and the Cajun hollandaise sauce tasted salty. My friends had the All American Breakfast - they were not impressed. It was below average. Their waffle was not freshly made. I would go back again to try something different, ONLY because of the customer service.

I went to this place the past weekend, and it was my first time here. The Veggie Black Bean Burger blew my mind. It was amazing. I've never had such an awesome burger before. Not just food, but even the ambiance was good. The booths are very cozy. Great service. I loved this place. It was a bit noisy, but that is because it was crowded. Next time, I would like to try the upper level of the bar.

Went here with three friends for drinks. Was well staffed and the waitress was responsive. There was a band playing which we didn't care for but it made for funny conversation anyway. Even on a busy saturday night they were able to take care of us with no problem. Couple friends ordered food, which seemed like typical bar food. But overall not a bad place to go after the movies.

Remind me of those dirty college dive bars that I used to frequent back when I was in college, only older crowd. This is a two level establishment. Pretty big open area on second area, more accommodating for parties and such. I've come here on two occasions for work socials. We usually bring a crowd of 20+ people. My co-worker always calls a month or two in advance to make reservations or to let them know to expect a large crowd on that specific Saturday. Once we arrive there is a supposed waiter that takes all of our food and drink orders but I never really see them. They really should have at least 2 people covering our parties, we get a little thirsty ;) Food is mediocre. Calamari is standard and probably the only thing I'll order there. I remember ordering the burger once, meh, save your money and go to chick-fil-a down the street. Drinks are pretty standard too. I do remember the first time I went there my dirty martini tasted...... Like dirty rag water. I told the manager and they promptly made me another one which was ok. We do have to go to the bar for drinks because we don't really see our server but that's fine. There's a lot of us. Overall average. They accommodated our party pretty well. Especially at the bar lol.

Terrible food. Service is ok, but this place has horrible trivia nights, bad live music, and has a large space upstairs that they don't utilize well. I would love for a decent bar to replace it.

Good authentic Irish food. Downstairs is more traditional Irish pub setting. Upstairs bar is more like a club , dance floor. Great selection of beers. Friendly staff. One of the few good bars in silver spring.

McGinty's easily falls under the definition of hidden gem. I've probably passed it no less than 100 times over the years during my various treks through downtown Silver Spring, and not once had it ever occurred to me to actually go inside. That's so sad!! I wish I had discovered it sooner! I made my way to McGinty's on a Friday night; downstairs was packed and so we headed upstairs (which was also packed!). Since we were there for dinner, we were able to grab some seats in the dining hall (and away from the loud music and large groups that are McGinty's on Friday and Saturday nights). The menu is pretty expansive, which can make it difficult to decide what you want if you don't already have a general idea. I opted for the stew sampler which included decent sized servings of lamb stew, beef stew, and shepard's pie. Pair that with a beer and you will be in heaven! Now, by no means do I consider myself a stew person, but every single bite was delicious! I should be embarrassed to say that I ate all of it, but I'm not! Our waitress was exceptional and even though the dining area closes around 10 PM, we didn't feel rushed or hurried. Afterwards, we made our way over to the next room for more drinks and dancing. Talk about a one-stop shop! So don't be like me by continuing to pass up McGinty's and never going in. You're missing out on a good thing!

I prefer coming for the food rather than the bar. I'd always come for the bar in the past, which has been mixed, but recently came for dinner with friends. I was expecting greasy bar food, and having to force down a burger, but their menu was quite the opposite. Of course there were burgers, but also a variety of salads, stews, and traditional Irish meals. I got the caesar salad with grilled salmon, and it was delicious. It came with a full half a lemon, which I can't eat salmon without. The salmon was cooked perfectly: a little crispy, but still very moist. The salad itself was good with proper amount of dressing. Don't be scared of the free bread on the table. I almost passed on it, because it looked like some cold standard slices of bagged wheat bread you'd buy at the grocery store. It wasn't; it was amazing, and basically tasted like corn bread. The price was a little higher than I was expecting, but it's a really nice, quiet atmosphere with good food.

Was pleasantly surprised to find out this place has such a great 3 course brunch for just $20. Crepes Brulee (4/5 NOMs) When desserts fall in love. Its as if crepe and cram brûlée got married and had a baby. One very delicious baby. They combined the best of two things with crepe covered in lemon custard base cream and topped with berries and toasted pecans. It wasn't just sweet, it was super sweet with a mixture of soft and crunchy texture. Kind of wish they give you a knife to eat with, because the spoon is just not sharp enough to cut through the crepe. Crab Cake Eggs Benedict (4/5 NOMs) I might have brunch eggdiction. It really is hard to pass up ordering Eggs Benedict, we might just have a problem. Love poking holes and letting all the runny egg yoke flow everywhere. After all, why order poached eggs unless they flow. So many places do it wrong, but here they do it right. Comes with two solid crab cakes that would make Maryland proud as a crab state. They are not too big and kind of left us wanting a bit more. What really set this apart form everything else were the potatoes. Don't know what they did to them, but they tasted so good. Almost asked for extra. Brunch Tart (3/5 NOMs) Mcbrunching tart away. Its a big Boris fist size square crispy tart filled with a mixture of avocado, tomatoes, mozzarella and scallions. All that topped with a sunny side up egg and a piece of bacon. This is one of those dishes you got to enjoy little bit of everything together in every bite for the best flavor combination. Tart is a little bit dry so make sure to get that sunny side up egg everywhere. Still every flavor seem to fit just right and a light flavor was quite enjoyable. Good way to start your brunching adventure.

As a repeat customer: I am absolutely livid that on 04/24/2015 at 11:45pm the on duty bouncer turned me and my group away because he asked if I had been drinking tonight, after a beer over dinner I answered yes and he turned me away and described my skin complexion as a little red. I come here to spend my money quite often and if I am Asian and have a slight "Asian glow" that is my business and to be judged by my skin complexion is absolute discrimination. Service up until this point had been amazing, always loved it, but now I will be telling everyone that this place has bs rules that are unfair. What drinking establishment doesn't admit customers who drink. How redundant. Worst experience ever, I am not keen on being judged as a drunk when I am sober. I am absolutely coherent and understand what a drunk is. He recommended that I take my group to the local pub Quarry House. I came to show my friends the "Mcgintys in Silver Spring" experience. NEVER AGAIN. By the way, I am sober enough to proofread my own review on yelp. How drunk am I really?

This place looks small on the outside but is very large on the inside. It also has more than one floor. This is a great place to have some bar food, reasonably priced drinks for the area, and watch a sports game on their large flat screen tvs. I'm not much of a sports fan, so I won't be coming here often. The waitress was very genuine and the drinks were strong. I would suggest this place to larger groups than couples.

Over the years McGinty's has been the go-to pub for me. It has an upstairs and downstairs. The down is more your typical Irish pub. Upstairs they have a large bar area for trivia, live music and has more of a bar feel to it. They have a fine dining room up there also. They have plenty of TVs dotted about for sports and they have an excellent beer selection. Located in the middle of Wayne Avenue they are perfectly located. Service has always been great here and I love their Monday night trivia at 7pm. My favourite pub outside DC and I have probably been here 50-75 times at this point. Five stars for me. Also their bangers and mash are really good at about 14 dollars. Really good.

Great price-fixe brunch on Saturdays and Sundays, 10AM - 3PM. The Crab Cake Eggs Benedict is divine as is the bread pudding. Otherwise can never go wrong with the Fish and Chips ... best in town. I'm not a drinker, but have been told the beer and whiskey selection is exceptional. Great gem in Silver Spring.

Decent bar. I prefer this bar over others in Dtss. The hh beers were decent price. Their hh food menu consisted of everything fried for 5$. The portions were good so it is worth the 5$. I didn't want fried foods so I got the casserole sampler for 16$. It came with veggies, lamb stew, beef stew and Shepard pie. All were pretty good. Suuuuper filling! Definitely too much for me. My bf really enjoyed his hh wings. He said they were actually spicy! He also got the mini fish and chips which came with a lot of fries and a piece of which that was like 6/8 inches long. The fish was nice and crispy. Our friend got the egg rolls and a quesadilla. Both for 5$. I think he enjoyed them too because they were all gone. I'm not fond of the divey (smelly- I'm sensitive to smells) quarry house .. Or the pricey bars like Jackie and urban butcher. This is the bar I prefer in Dtss.

Decent place to hang with friends and have drinks. The top floor is especially large so you should have no trouble getting a seat. The food is awful. For that reason, I hadn't eaten here in 3 or 4 years but I recently noticed they have a revamped menu and was hoping they turned the kitchen around. Nope. The chicken and waffles were disgusting. The chicken was greasy, the waffles tasted like cardboard, and the bacon strips were covered in a thick glaze that made them inedible. So disappointing. Stick to drinks here and eat elsewhere.

Can I give ten stars?? I can't believe I haven't yelped McGinty's yet. This is THE go to place for kick back drinks, games, grub, pre-movie pre-lubes and general luxurious time wastin'! The food is outstanding, from the mussels to the Grown Up Mac n' Cheese to the Black Label burger with venison and pork belly. The staff is even better, and they treat you more like a returning friend than a patron (or maybe I have just finally de-evoled into a drunk bar-fly?). Seriously today the bartender already knew I wanted a Guinness, even tho she doesn't always serve me and I don't always drink Guinness. And Jared actually calls us by name and waves us hello and goodbye from across the bar! (Check out his moonshine kickstart venture, littlemisscraftspirits.c… ). They always put on a game for me, even if it's between Tampa Bay Lightning and the New York Rangers, and The Wizzards are currently in the NBA playoffs. And they're right next to the theater so you can grab a bite and a beer or four before taking in a flick. Did I mention the awesome grub? They have a huge upstairs for when you want to party, and a downstairs pub-style bar when you want to belly up to the bar and hang with Jared. They even have a restaurant inside a restaurant called "the Room" if you want a more upscale meal. simply put, this place rocks.

We went to The Room at McGuinty's tonight. Delicious dinner--guinoa and kale salad with strawberries and apples was fabulous. Seafood with fresh pasta excellent, and salmon great. The service was fabulous. Nice to have a more formal dining option in Silver Spring that is tasty and won't break the bank!

Probably more like 2.5. We wandered in on a busy Friday, checking to see if they could accommodate us. The hostess, and a gentleman who seemed like an owner, were somewhat cryptic with us...they didn't explain whether they had space or not, and I guess were trying to decide. Finally, they offered that we wait, or could go upstairs. We were game for whatever, so we went upstairs. When we got upstairs, we hit yet another hostess station, and a similar sort of confusion. Finally, a nice guy (again, think he was an owner) said they're trying something new, with a bistro-type place inside the regular restaurant. Without really having another choice, we opted for that. We were the only folks in the room to start, but it quickly filled up. The menu was extremely ambitious, but the explanations were somewhat lacking. When we asked if a pasta dish was spicy, the obviously new and nervous waitress lept into a complicated and convoluted description of the dish, including the comment that it contained 8 ounces of lobster. (I'm not a restaurant owner, but that'd be a pretty astonishing amount of lobster in a 22-23 buck dish). My wife ended up with the pasta dish, which is pasta with squid ink (trust me - much tastier than it sounds), the lobster, shrimp, and other seafood. I got a dish that was not what I expected...the menu mentioned lamb, foie gras, and vegetables...what I got was three rather unappetizing-looking meatballs on a plate with some sporadic carrots. The dish desperately needed something to lighten the fatty, heavy flavor, as well as some sort of spice, as it was remarkably bland. My wife's pasta dish was flavorful and well balanced. It had a little closer to 2 ounces of lobster, which is not a complaint - just an observation of the waitresses' knowledge (or lack thereof) of the dishes. They brought out my daughter's meal several minutes after ours, while we waited and our dishes got cold. This is, in my opinion, absolutely inexcusable when you're expecting finer-than-average food and service. Honestly, it's inexcusable at a Denny's. I think with a different set of variables, and perhaps a different dish on my part, this would have been a nice experience. Staff were obviously fumbling still, but they were all very pleasant. I can't really comment on the pub food, but in retrospect, we really wish we had gone for that. Big caveat with this review: the bistro place was described as a "soft opening." Therefore, I anticipate this all will improve with time. (A free drink or half-price appetizer or something for a "soft opening" would really have helped :-) )

Love this place! Food is delicious and plentiful, drinks are well prepared, staff are super friendly and attentive, and the people who come here are tired from work and ready to relax. First and foremost- right off the bat- these people need to learn basic pub drink names. A black and tan is Guinness and Harp. A snakebite is Guinness and cider. There isn't (or shouldn't be) a drink that's Harp and cider, and even if there is it shouldn't go by either of these names. We went here on a double date with friends who live within walking distance. I've heard the bread is good but they didn't seem to have any this time. I asked, and our friend told us that he was very unsure when they gave it vs when they didn't. Sometimes he got bread, sometimes he didn't. That was fine though. We got our drinks (which they called black and tans but were actually snakebites) and we placed our orders. I ordered the sampler and my husband ordered the bangers and mash. Our friends ordered the fish and chips and the burger, respectively, but neither of them made any sort of comment about their food so I'm not reviewing their entrees. The sampler includes lamb stew, Guinness and beef stew, and a mini shepherd's pie. This one is technically a cottage pie- if I'm being pedantic- but in America it's common enough to call all such pies shepherd's pies no matter the meat so this is fine. My husband's dish included 2 or 3 sausages, a pile of mash, and a roasted half-tomato. The lamb stew was GAMEY. I like the gaminess of lamb. Very much actually. But DANG!!! A full sized portion would have been too much. Otherwise, the lamb stew was fine. The Guinness stew was sweeter than I'd have liked but otherwise fine. The mini shepherd's pie was maybe a tad watery but otherwise fine. My husband's sausage dish was acceptable. The only thing that really stood out was the vegetable medley that came with my meal. All of the vegetables were undercooked and ditto the shaved garlic. Raw garlic is not a hot look for mixed vegetables. IF someone else wanted to go here, I would. I'd eat something and expect it to not be actively bad and I'm sure it'd be... otherwise fine.

The new Room at McGinty's is such a great food experience. Such a great concept and the food is top notch. Great quality, fresh and plenty to fill you up! If your looking for a meal for a special occasion or just want a really good meal, this is your place. Can't wait to go back :) I know there will be something new to try cause the menu is seasonal too!

A good, solid Irish bar with traditional Irish pub food. Usually a bit loud with an aggressive DJ upstairs or live performer. Regardless, it's a staple of down town silver spring for a pint of beer and some food. Never have been disappointed by the food - nachos, fish and chips, and more that I'm simply not thinking of. A bit greasy, but that's to be expected at a joint like this. A good place for happy hours, catching up with friends, the occasional date night (not early in a relationship - unless you can snag some of the outdoor seating) or even the solitary pint.

Love McGintys! There is no place else that serves fries with that amazing curry sauce. An absolute must try. Also one of the few places that serves " wild" salmon. Love the shepherds pie also!

I have been here three times in the last 4 months. The food is really good and I love the style of the pub. I prefer the upstairs dining room over downstairs. It's more intimate and has an upscale look and feel. The roasted chicken, kale and fingering potatoes is really tasty. Probably my favorite meal. I also love the stuffed rainbow trout. Recently, I moved to the Paleo lifestyle. I stopped by McGinty's and decided on the burger w/o the bun and cheese. That was the most well seasoned burger. The side salad was light and the dressing was just right. Our server told me they're changing the set up and I'm pretty excited. Don't pass this by as a run of the mill pub, the outside will throw you off. Just go in and dine upstairs, you will not be disappointed. Oh and the service is pristine!

What a great place to try! After an eventful day in DC decided to come here and check it out from a friends recommendation was not disappointed. Definitely a fun place for late night food and fun. Tonight there was a live music group who played guitars and took song requests, they also encourage crowd participation. The entire bar was singing along with said artists how fun! Now to the food... Even though I didn't order an entree the spinach and calamari that our group ordered came out quickly and tastes great. Exactly how it was explained on the menu is exactly how it came out. Definitely pleasing. I would definitely come back here again. The live music, food, and atmosphere is something you have to experience.

I love McGinty's! Brunch, awesome! I have the nutritionally sound crabcake eggs benedict, but my husband gets the outrageous dessert-like banana custard French toast. The lemon ricotta pancakes were also good. Why do we call such things "food," or "breakfast," when clearly they should be called "entertainment?" Haven't yet been able to get the red velvet pancakes. But that's just good reason to come back! We've also had dinner a few times. The stews were great. I ordered an Irish dish (what does "Irish food" even mean? potatoes? turns out, yes!) - something called Colcannon, cabbage and potatoes. It was a bland sort of thing, but even so I could tell it was well done. You know how that is. It's like how you don't like Prince, and yet you can tell he's talented. Recently we went to the special room they just opened. I had ahi tuna, which was delicious, although strangely plated in a deep soup dish. (Did I just say "plated?" Too much Chopped!) Also I had a pasta thing with crab lumps, very nice, homemade pasta, interesting flavors. My husband had the meurgez appetizer (sausage and lentils) and lamb provencal, and liked both. My mother in law was firmly approving of the venison and pork burger. The only negative was the waiter; a young guy who turned every interaction into a monologue about himself. Every question we asked got a brief non-answer immediately followed by "For me," and then something about the dishes he liked there, his life, his parents, his plans for the future. (We call such people Meme.) Some people find themselves endlessly fascinating. I guess they have friends who are willing to listen but patrons at a restaurant should not be imposed upon in this way. Meme needs some training. Trivia night is fun, although long because of the time needed for scoring. All in all, one of my current favorites in the area.

Went here last night after A 5 hour salon appointment across from them. 1. It was Crowded 2. There was only 1 server for the WHOLE business! Bless her heart she was working the bottom floor and upstairs and the back room. *Nonsense* If that was the Manager standing behind the bar for the moment he should have assisted her more by seating and taking orders. I looked at other clients foods and their reactions before placing my order. I was going for a burger, until I glanced at the couple behind me. The lady was not happy with her Turkey burger and she lifted her bun and started pinching at the meat and cheese and just left it alone. *Scratch the burger* I ordered fish and chips. It came out 5 minutes later which I thought was fast considering the crowd. It was grease filled but cooked. The fries were greasy with a mash potato consistency. I ate a few and left the rest. The beer was cold and good. The facility itself is nice and the crowd seemed jovial. I personally wouldn't eat here again. I think I can find better. Angie

I had a terrific meal at the Room at McGinty's - the new restaurant upstairs at McGinty's. The set-up of the Room is really cool. As soon as you enter the Room, you realize you are in for a warm and friendly dinning experience. It felt like everyone in the restaurant was enjoying themselves and was well looked after the whole night. I was at a table of four and everyone loved their dishes (veal, venison, lamb, and salmon). The veal had loads of flavor and was cooked perfectly. I also highly recommend the brussel spouts as a side.

The bartender teased that he had never had anyone study at the bar when I stopped in for a brew and reviewed some note cards for an exam. He remembered me when I came by a few days later (probably because I, again, brought books and study materials). Friendly staff, and tasty, cold brewskies. I also highly recommend their fish and chips. The beer batter is flaky and the fish is cooked to perfection. I am also a big fan of the sherry-lemon aioli and homemade tartar sauce. Their steamed mussels was AMAZING!! The broth is cooked with fresh thyme, shallots, garlic bread, white wine coconut curry broth served with a side of garlic bread. I couldn't get enough of the sauce. A definite must try!

I can only speak for the bar, since I was only here to kill some time before an event. That said, the staff was friendly and knowledgeable, the beer was cold, and the atmosphere was decidedly "Irish pub". From what I saw in other parts of this town, the beer here is downright affordable, with most being under $6 a pint. In addition, there was some actual variety on the taps, instead of the hop bombs I saw in nearby establishments. (Seriously, I know IPA's are "in", and I do enjoy them, but I don't always want to drink 9% pine cone juice). Heck, they even had Magner's cider on tap, which is oh-so-much better than Strongbow or Woodchuck. The only critique I could say about the bar is that I wish they had a few more craft beers, even in bottles. Then again, I'm always craving craft beers. If I'm ever in the area again, I'll be back here - I still gotta try the food, after all.

I came to McGinty's for the first time for a brunch with some friends. A girlfriend recommended it, and as she organized us getting together, she picked the place. Everything about this place is simply average at best. I wasn't really impressed with the food, but it wasn't bad either. However, the mimosas were, in my opinion, really not very good. I found the service to be lackluster, the layout of the restaurant and bar to be quite odd, but the owners clearly made the best use of the oddly shaped space they have. The whole place felt like it hadn't seen a mop or a can of paint in decades, and as though it was probably at one time quite a cute, niche sort of place, but now it's just dilapidated. I realize many bars have this grungy feel because it's sort of inherent to their nature, but it just wasn't the greatest for the price point. Needless to say, I won't be going back unless someone else opts to go here with a group.

This is arguably my favorite restaurant in the area, and my family and I have become regulars to the point that we know and love 90% of the service staff. The best part of McGinty's is the service. I can't say enough good things about it. Nicole is one of greatest people I've ever met and is one of the main reasons we became regulars in the first place. Molly is also awesome. And, really, every other waiter or waitress that we've had have been top-notch. The food is great, too. Their chef is known to be incredible, and he doesn't disappoint. The eggplant au gratin is my go-to favorite, but I also love the chickpea burger. They also have a good selection of beers--always at least one solid IPA to suit my taste.

We stopped in here for brunch. It's a standard Irish pub type place. Ok ambiance and decor. Not much to it. Ok service. Friendly, but not exactly attentive. Prices are typical. Food was average. Since it was Restaurant Week, they had a decent 3-course brunch menu. All the dishes were good. Portions were large. Nothing was fabulous. They do offer mimosas and a small make your own bloody mary bar. The standard brunch menu includes some breakfast items, as well as burgers and the like. I opted for the fish and chips. It was one huge piece of fish. It was tasty. It's wasn't the best fish and chips I've ever had. But it was certainly better than some. Overall, it's a decent place. Not worth a special trip. But worth a stop if you're in the area and hungry.

I've been back many times since, for happy hours and sports viewing and a couple bands and trivia nights. Trivia night (Mondays) is awesome, especially if you want to watch MNF as well. Your group of 6 or less can win prizes like tshirts and keychains, and the trivia is fun and diverse. They have NFL Sunday Ticket (every game), and the food is consistently good, but nothing to die for. The deserts are average and sound better on the menu than they taste, and the service is always good and friendly. I'll keep on coming!

Stopped in here before the Dropkick Murphy's show. One would think, being a Friday night, with DK 2 blocks away, the management would have thought to put on some additional staff. Nope. We arrived, at 5pm, with no reservations and went to the second floor bar. We were able to mingle a bit before we secured a self-seating bar booth. Our waiter immediately came over and took a drink order. We didnt see him again for 20 min. We ordered some wings for apps. Another 20 min later, the wings came out. We had no napkins, no side plates, no utensils, and at this point no drinks. We asked for another round and some utensils and napkins. After 10 min, we just ate. Our drinks came, and still no utensils. Finally our waiter came back. We ordered dinner and again asked for utensils; they weren't totally necessary for apps, but they were for dinner. When dinner came, another 20 min, we still had no napkins, no utensils, our empty app plates were still sitting on the table and not removed when dinner was dropped off. We got up and found our own utensils and napkins. Dinner was...ok. The mash advertised with the guinness stew is literally a tablespoon. The fish for the fish and chips is a GIANT filet, which would have been fine for a plated dinner entree but not really for f&c. Whatever. It was now closing in on 8pm. We ate it and looked for the check, with the dirty app plates still on the table. All of this being said, I felt terrible for our waiter. He was so clearly in the weeds, as was everyone else. The bartenders were running sprints behind the bar. Managers were bussing tables. I can only assume that this was not a normal Friday night and the management failed the staff this night. We dont spend much time in Silver Spring, but if we find ourselves there again, I would give McGinty's another shot on a less busy night. Maybe.

Really enjoyed McGinty's. This is a cavernous, no frills place but the food portions are enormous, the food is really excellent, the beer is great, the selection is tremendous. I don't even know where to complain. I guess it's not super clean, it smells a bit like beer, and it just has a typical bar feel. But isn't that why you come here in the first place? There are tons of tvs and it's a great place to watch a game--or multiple games. Pro-tip: Fish and chips. Really good.

Happy hour is pretty good! The spring rolls are amazing! Cosmo rails at $4.50 each. Bartenders were attentive and willing to converse. Pretty laid back second floor bar. Will definitely be making more hh trips here.

This place is great! It is hard to find a decent bar in Silver Spring, so this makes for a great option whether you're are looking to eat, drink, or attend their weekly social events. I tend to go every couple Mondays for happy hour and trivia. It is always a lot of fun even though I have yet to win! I would recommend the black bean burger. It is really tasty, and I'm not even a vegetarian! Also, for some reason, their Guinness on tap is truly excellent. Somebody there really knows how to properly tap a keg.

Came here for happy hour one evening and service at the bar stinks! Our waitress was slow and unattentive. She blamed it on all the customers she had to serve, but she wasn't waiting on too many tables. Bah. Their happy hour menu had a several $5 food items and drinks that ranged from $3-$4. We ordered some volcanic chicken wings and the chicken quesadilla. The volcanic wings were okay, but I was expecting a lot more heat from there. They were basically buffalo wings coated with red pepper flakes. You'd expect them to be spicy with the red pepper flakes, but they weren't. Also, when I hear volcanic, I'm expecting to eat wings that will make my nose run and my butt burn later. Didn't happen here. The chicken quesadillas were a complete joke. You got four measly pieces of tortilla that were oozing with cheese, but lacked chicken. Imagine getting a taco sized tortilla filled with cheese, but into four pieces. My last piece had chicken, but I couldn't taste any in the other three pieces. They could have gave you at least one or two more pieces as well! Come on now. Happy hour looked promising on paper, but eh...totally was not impressed.

Love this place ! I delayed in saying as much because I wanted to do them justice when I did. I've posted a few pictures. Last weekend was enough to prompt me to write.... So I pop in on a Saturday morning during the regular summer farmer's market outside of the place and they've got English League Football on. I'm In ! I watch Everton vs Leicester City while eating a very delicious corned beef hash breakfast with eggs, asparagus, potatoes and some orange juice. At that point in time all was right in the world and I was happy and content. That's what you want in life and in that moment I was. It's been that way with other times I've popped in here: To watch football, to have a beer after a long day, to just have something to eat that a little better than your average grab and go convenience-thing. There are two areas to sit in, a smaller bar on the ground floor and a more open area upstairs. This section features a large bar with TV's and a stage for live performances. There's also a private room for more personal events. Food is good and the beers are what you'd expect. Great place overall for what it is and for it's primo location. A well-deserved Five-Stars ! (Next time I'll take a pic of the corned beef hash breakfast)

After seeing all the positive review of this place. I couldn't wait to try it out. I brought one of my friends from out of state for a Sunday brunch. Let me tell you, we were dissapointed. The service was poor, the waitress had no idea what the soup of the day was, or even half the stuff that was on the menu. We order bloody marry, waited 15min for our drink, and it was undrinkable. The food was ok, I had the micginty burger and my friend had the zuccinis fritata, not bad but not great, just average. We wanted butter for our toast, but the waitress didn't check on us once, yet there was no one in the restaurant. I don't know if she was having a bad day, but this is no way of treating your customer. Overall, mediocre experience, this is maybe a good spot to have a few drink, but be advise if you come to brunch Don't expect much

You know what, I have to bump McGinty's up a star. I've experimented with other food items and I have to admit -- they have some pretty great wings here. The volcanic are actually pretty, impressively hot. They are that perfect mix of ridiculously spicy where you WILL be sweating but it's not like you won't be able to complete your meal. Other random items that are delicious are the bangers and mashed, as well as a simple order of fries. The service is always a hit or miss. I've had kind servers and I've had servers on a bad day. Bartenders are always nice, though. However, try and avoid upstairs when its busy (weekends). The bartenders really skimp out on the alcohol. I don't drink that much -- I get hungover too easily -- but the whiskey sour was essentially all sour mix. When asked about this, the bartender said it'd be an extra $7 for another shot of whiskey. Obviously, I wasn't going to end up dropping $15 on one drink at a random Irish pub-knock off-type of place in suburban DC, but that experience was a disappointment. Still, it won't deter me from coming back. Maybe I'll just order my drinks downstairs where there is less of a crowd and the bartenders seem more personable. If they are ever charging cover upstairs, never pay it. It's a waste of money. Just hang downstairs. Regarding the beer selection, it is surprisingly poor. They advertise a "Four Rotating Draft/Tap Selection"...well, it hasn't changed in the last year and the options are quite bland (Blue Moon and Leinkeugel are a few of them, for example). Only craft options as of 8/17/14 were Star Hill Northern lights IPA, Dogfish 60 min, and Heavy Seas Loose Cannon -- essentially all IPAs. In a nutshell: good food (reasoning for the 4 star overall review), weak beer (2 star), noticeably inconsistent service (2 - 5 stars).

My beloved McGinty's. So glad I've found found this place. Cool bar that is deceivingly big. Been here for Happy Hours a few times and on Fridays they have a DJ upstairs. Fun atmosphere. The crab cake sandwich and fish and chips have consistently been good.

The first time I came here, the service was great. I sat at the bar and my burger was hot and it came out fast. I felt impelled to write this review because this time (as I am sitting here now) the burger and the fries were NOT hot! I had a meal to go that was so hot! The manager then told us that it was hot when it left the kitchen! BUT we said that it was not hot and he said it was hot. At the end of the day he reluctantly took the burger off of our bill, but still basically called us liars about our food not being hot. I am pissed off and yes we were yelling and cursing because this was so unfair! All they had to do was take the burger back and give us a new HOT fucking burger! Our server was Brendan and the managers name is Donal! Donal said he knows about customer service but he obviously knows nothing. No, the customer is not always right but in this case our food was not hot and we were right, even though he told us OUR food that we ate was hot. The manager told us that we could write a yelp if we wanted to and seemed that we were just wanting a free meal! When we paid for our meal plus a tip to the manager last time because we sat at the bar. He says that he remembers us and the fact that we had hot food last time and will now complain this time. I am writing corporate and blowing up Facebook pages and Twitter. They stopped serving us and told us that they were done with us! They made their bed now they need to lay in it! I am very pissed !!!!

Not much I can say about McGinty's Public House, it is a typical Irish pub. Decent beer on tap and in the bottle, mostly domestic but they throw in a couple of foreign that might peak your interest. Decent staff, all friendly and helpful but I didn't run in to any personality that really stuck out in my mind. Decent space, there is an upstairs and downstairs, I stayed downstairs, mid sized place, bar area takes up the majority of the downstairs area, there is also a small room that could hold 10 to 15 people if you want to go with a bigger group. Decent spot to go and grab a drink, sit at the bar and enjoy a brew while catching a game or just catching up with some buddies.

Came to the pub with some coworkers for a couple of pre-meal pints. Very nice beer selection and really good service. Other coworkers said the food is very good as well, though we did not partake on this visit. The real reason for 5 stars is their continued commitment to service, even after you leave. I picked up the tab for everyone, but lost my receipt which I intended to expense. The manager hunted down the original signed receipt a few weeks later and sent me a picture of it. I will be frequenting this place on my next visit, and I appreciate their hard work. A great restaurant with people who care!

A friend suggested McGinty's as an afternoon lunch spot, a good place to get drinks for four folks who had just been laid off. I wandered in first and expected your standard, Americanized Irish pub. But a real, live Irish woman greeted me at the door! Not sure of her role in the restaurant, but it at least made it seem more authentic. Jokes aside, the food was pretty good. I'm a sucker for a Shepherd's pie (c'mon! beefy goodness with mashed potatoes on top! what's not to love?), and theirs was pretty tasty. In addition, their lunch special is downright fantastic. $8.95 for a salad and entree? Just what the doctor ordered for these ladies who won't be getting a paycheck anymore. Why yes, we'll have another round with all that money we've saved. The waiter was sweet, attentive, and offered delicious soda bread to soak up the booze (with a smile). Too bad we had to drive home, or we would have needed lots more bread.

  • Elodie T.

I have been here for food only. I especially like the Shepherd's Pie, and other dishes have varying degrees of success with my friends. Regarding seating- my friends and I have sat in the downstairs dining area (crowded although there are two to three tables that are set apart in the back) and an upstairs. I think that service might be better downstairs than upstairs, but I haven't come often enough to judge that with certainty. The Shepherd's Pie is really good but not always consistent- I once ordered it and was disappointed because it seemed like the ratio of mashed potatoes to meat was off, but it turned out that it was because the layers were not evenly distributed. Next time I might just mix it all just so I know I have an even distribution! It also comes with some steamed vegetables (nothing special there but there's a good amount). PS: Don't get coffee here. Friend got some because he was going to a midnight showing and wanted to stay awake and it was apparently really bad. Too bad Starbucks was closed!

WOW!!! First time there last evening. Two of us had the chicken which was the best we've ever had!!! The fresh sage and the flavor of the kale was amazing! One other person had the trout, which was also full of flavor! We took home the bread pudding which is to die for, and the vegetarian lasagna that was full of flavor! We had the house cabernet wine that was excellent for a house wine! Our waiter Christian was also exceptional. He was outstanding actually! We live in Alexandria, but I promise you, it was well worth the trip and we will make the trip any day for that exceptional quality of food and service! By the way, it was my son, who is incidentally a chef by trade, who recommended this restaurant to us!!! Enjoy!!!

Check out "The Room" inside of McGinty's! They just changed the old dinning room to a 'restaurant within a restaurant' concept. A new kind of experience now called 'The Room' with completely different menu from the rest of the bar (which is also awesome!). This menu on the other hand is absolutely fantastic! Had the Ahi Tuna Tartar for an appetizer which made me melt in my seat! Only wish they will make a whole meal out of it! Had the 'Spring Lamb Provancal' (fancy!) for entrée which was well... I am not a food critique so... I have no words!!!!

Recently had a post corporate team meeting event at McGinty's. We had a group of about thirty people and worked with staff to secure some reserved tables upstairs and ordered some hors d'oeuvres that were laid out very nicely on a table for us (including fish & chips and chicken skewers-all very delicious!). Hopper, the manager, was very helpful and responsive to all our needs and questions when planning the event, and the staff overall was wonderful to work with. Our server, Dusty, was very present and always had an upbeat, positive attitude. The drinks were tasty and well made, and the space was cozy and fun (better than a lot of Irish pubs I've been to around the area). Would definitely recommend this as a happy hour spot and a location to consider for larger group events like ours!

Recently, on a Friday night I asked for my bill. I gave the waitress $40 my bill $11 and change. She brings me $7 back. I asked for the rest of the change and reminded her that I gave her $40, She brings me a $10 and I asked for the change and she tossed me a dollar. I will return to complain to the manager and that is it. I have never had a bad experience there but this was WRONG. I always tip, she did have to try to take it.

I used to love coming here. The food was usually consistently good. Unfortunately, for the first in my string of visits to McGintys, I ordered something off the menu I didn't like. It was some special burger offering that it sounded like I would like, however it had a mixture of spices that made it taste like a taco. I am not a fan of tex-mex spices and told the waitress I didn't like the burger because it had spices on it that was not listed on the menu. I asked my spouse to taste it and they said it was awful. I asked if I could replace it with a regular cheeseburger. The waitress said that the manager would not allow for it to be replaced because it was a more expensive burger. So I watched my spouse eat the rest of their meal, paid for the food, and left. We won't be back anymore. :(

Love this place. Their brunch is great and the food is delicious. The fish and chips is very good, the black bean burger is also great. Coffee is so-so, but I guess Irish pubs are more about alcoholic drinks than coffee. Friendly service.

Very solid food if not a tad bit pricey. I had the Irish Sampler with more than ample servings of Shepard's Pie, Lamb Stew, and Beef Stew. All three were very good; the beef and lamb were very tender. If I were to pick one dish of the three, it would be the lamb stew. My wife had the fish and chips which was tasty. McGinty's is a great place for a meal and a drink.

I just realized today, on my thousandth visit here, that I've never had a bad experience here. Servers are always nice, food is always good. Even the dessert is yummy. Every time I come here I get fries cuz they are delicious. However, I am totally heartbroken that the chickpea burger has been retired. That thing was orgasmic.

We've been going to McGintys for 5 years now and have always been satisfied! We mostly visit for special occasions to have dinner or brunch, but have visited the bar once. The food is out of this world and frankly some of the best Irish cuisine I've had in Maryland. There's nothing I wouldn't recommend! It's easy to run up a substantial bill, but the portions are large and hearty - well worth the price. The lamb stew has big, meaty chunks, the shepherd's pie is cooked well and never runny. Lastly, the fish and chips order...not greasy, cooked well and nearly enough for 2. We've tried their specials during a few visits and I've never once been disappointed. Also, indulge in a dessert - I highly recommend the creme brûlée! Lastly, the upstairs dining area makes for a wonderful spot for intimate occasions. It's softly lit, rustic, and generally not overly crowded...sound in the room carries easily on busy nights and it can get noisy quick, I recommend visiting on a week night for a smaller crowd.

  • Melissa S.

My husband and I have been here many times... but only for the fish and chips as they are stellar. However, when it comes to any other food we have ever ordered here, it's been either over-cooked to death (that poor pork chop), or completely flavorless (eggs benedict crab cake, asparagus soup, etc.). We have come to the conclusion that other than the fish and chips, everything they serve is pre-packaged and simply re-heated (poorly) or the chef doesn't have taste buds. Don't know about the night life, but if you are going for anything other than fish and chips, just go to Chipotle next door.

McGinty's is a nice place for kicking back listening to music. I like the musicians in the upstairs and downstairs areas. On St. Patrick's Day, it was lovely to see that families were there with their wee ones dancing around and having a good time. On St. Patricks Day they had cool acoustic music. On other days they seem to favor retro pop. None of it was very Irish, but it is pleasant enough. I like the pub food. Bangers and mash with a black and tan...Awesome! An IPA with a Reuben...heaven even if it isn't very Irish! My date ordered a chickpea burger with fries! It is surprising to have an Irish restaurant with vegan food! The wait staff are friendly, attentive and pleasant. I had a run in with one unpleasant employee, but on my last two visits this unpleasant individual was happily absent. Mean unhappy people should not be in an Irish Pub. "May those who love us love us.And those that don't love us, may God turn their hearts. And if He doesn't turn their hearts, may he turn their ankles, so we'll know them by their limping." McGinty's, I'll definitely be coming back to try your other Irish food. Sláinte!

Most delectably unique (& home-made!) menu items I've seen come from an Irish styled pub!! I had the 'Squid Ink Pasta' and wow, besides it being an unusual thing to see on the featured menu, It was absolutely delicious! The options were well priced, and the portions were generous! I had even come back the next time i had been in the area, and again, everything was home-made and prepared to a "T", not to mention the fact they have a pretty nice selection of brews on tap offered at a competitive price to the area. Oh,and don't forget to peruse the dessert menu, you'll thank me later!! This bar offers seemingly ample seating and sports a cozy downstairs bar as well as a more open bar upstairs and a well lit dining area complete with attentive servers and what I'd consider easily a Five-star chef! I will definitely make it a point to come back here again for another exciting adventure for my palette come the next time I'm in the Silver Spring, MD/ D.C. area :) Five Star establishment!

McGuinty's is one of my favorite happy hour spots. The bar upstairs is cozy and the food and drink specials are pretty good. The dinner menu is fancier than expected for an Irish bar but everything I've tried has been very good. Definitely recommend the bangers and mashed!

While I think it would be great to provide a review of the food here, I can't say that I was able to experience the food menu. However, after a long day of work this was one of the few places near my hotel that I could grab a quick beer. Great atmosphere, nice patio outside, decent draft beer selection, and the staff was super friendly. I would come back to try their food, though - seems like a a solid menu.

Went on a Friday afternoon. Slow but friendly service. I ordered the meatball appetizer to receive overly-grilled bread (like, really? how hard is it to prepare bread) and overly-crisp meatball coating. I convinced myself that the meatball was meant to be on the crisper side for the outside as the inside was a nice medium cook. They have good happy hour specials (3pm - 7pm if I remember correctly) so I may visit again if I'm in the area at that time.

The place was so good I ate there two nights in a row. The Shepherd's Pie was outstanding. The second night I ordered the sampler and the lamb stew was equally enjoyable. The grilled vegetables were seasoned well and lightly cooked, leaving the nutrients in the crunch. Pretty decent beer selection on tap, probably 10 or so? My only compliant is the fact that there was a band playing Irish tunes acoustically in the far back room. They were barely audible and worthy of a front room appearance.

I went here because I was in the area and there was a patio. Everything was fine until I saw a bug crawl off my plate from under my salad. I understand sometimes you may find a friend in fresh greens. It happens. I get it. I was appalled, though, when the manager came over and basically said "that did not come from the kitchen. It came from Starbucks. It has wings. It flew in". That was annoying. But what was even worse was that I was charged for the salad. Does it really matter where it came from? I will probably never go back.

Great food at reasonable prices. This place is two levels with plenty of room for dining or just hanging out at the bar. The large bar area upstairs has plenty of seating options so you won't get stuck standing all night like at some other bars. The service was a little slow, but very friendly and the managers were attentive.

3.5 stars. Thursday night was my second visit to McGinty's. The first time we sat at the upstairs bar for dinner since it was late. Last night we were downstairs in a booth around 8 o'clock. Even though the place was packed, our server was right on top of things. We put in our drink and appetizer order right away and the drinks arrived promptly. Followed shortly by our mussels. The mussels were steamed perfectly, the broth addicting, and the garlic bread was toasted just right. For mains my friend and I shared the bacon wrapped roasted salmon with a bell pepper sauce and McGinty's Irish Casserole Sampler (Beef and Guiness Stew, Lamb Stew, and Sheperd's Pie) which is served with steamed vegetables. The ends of the salmon were a bit overdone but the middle bites were cooked perfectly. This was a good dish. As for the Casserole Sampler - all three dishes were quite tasty. I don't always like big pieces of lamb but was curious about the stew so the sampler was a nice way to try it without having to order an main course sized portion. I liked it but I liked both the Guiness Stew and the Sheperd's Pie better. Luckily my friend really likes lamb and was more than happy to eat the majority of the Lamb Stew. The Beef and Guiness stew was a delicious blend of flavors and tasted like it had been slow cooked. I would definitely order this again, but my favorite dish of the Sampler was the Sheperd's Pie. I've made Sheperd's Pie a few times, but there is something in the "gravy" in McGinty's that is just so delicious. I'm now on a mission to figure out how to make mine just as good. McGinty's is a solid restaurant. I've had good service and good food on both visits and the next time I am in that area of Silver Spring I would be more than happy to go back.

Love this place! Was my husband birthday and we were just strolling through Silver Spring tryong to find somewhere to eat and I am so happy we went here. The food was delish with perfect portions sizes. I luckily saved enough room for desert we had the bread pudding which the waitress recommended which was so good even I began to feel stuffed I couldnt stop eating it. The drinks and service (Brenda) where pretty good too! I was surprised when the bill came also for the amount of food and drinks we had for it to be as low as it was. The have a variety of menu option and even a vegetarian section, which always makes me happy. Love the atmosphere and the decor also, can't wait to go on a night when they have live music. We will definitely be going back!!

For happy hr food quality. My arteries are clogged after very cheesy potato skins and even cheesier chicken quesadilla (both of which I was expecting to be better bc recommended by bartender). Pico de gallo seemed to be mildly seasoned tomatoes without usual kick. I was thinking that I'd rather eat the frozen quesadilla from trader joes at home. First time (I think), I got impression that one comes here more for social hub/atmosphere, rather than quality food.

As someone who lives in Silver Spring, McGinty's Public House has become one of my go-to places - it's especially good for when you have a mixed group because there will be something for everyone. I've been at least a dozen times since I moved to Silver Spring in 2011. The food is excellent, I haven't been disappointed yet. The atmosphere is fun and welcoming whether you're sitting downstairs at the bar, upstairs at the larger bar/ dining area, or, outside on the patio (my favorite). I give McGinty's five stars basically because I always have a good time when I'm there and I know I'll be back. Specific Pro's - Irish Food - McGinty's bills itself as an Irish Pub and they deliver when it comes to the Irish food. The corned beef (and ruben!) is delicious, fatty enough, and not overcooked. - The rest of the menu is great too! I love the wings and sweet potato fries. My boyfriend loves the burgers, especially the new-ish venison burger that's been on special recently. - Welcoming staff - the waiters/ waitress/ bartenders have always been friendly without being annoyingly chatty. Everyone seems to have a good sense of humor, and the place doesn't take itself too seriously. - Atmosphere - upstairs has spacious/ comfortable booths. I especially like to sit outside. The McGinty's patio sits alongside Ellsworth, a pedestrian-only street, so there are no noisy/ smelly cars interrupting your meal. I also like the fact that I always see all different types of people when I'm at McGinty's - there are families with kids, groups of friends, the occasional loner just sitting at the bar watching the game, it's a comfortable local joint where you instantly feel like a regular. - Brunch - the pre-fixe menu is spectacular. $20 for an appetizer, entree, dessert, and drink. They have a make-your-own bloody mary station. I recommend the eggs benedict with crab cakes. A few con's - Happy Hour - $3 Shock Tops and Yeunglings and $5 appetizers, good prices but not great. And there's no happy hour on the patio. - Sometimes the upstairs bar area feels a little empty. It's perfect if you want to have a conversation with the people you're with, but, if you're looking for a really hopping bar on a Saturday evening this might not be the place for you.

McGinty's is a fun pub with a good vibe. Great place to watch the World Cup!! I'll say "yay" for their fish & chips, that fish was so tender and the batter so light and delectable!!! However, just today we had the fried calamari upstairs, and it was....way too salty. The servers are lovely people, who are good with the customers, and the atmosphere seems a fun and friendly one. I hear they have karaoke on Wed. nights...looking forward to it!

This is your typcial Americanized Irish Pub. They sat us in a clean booth, the food came out very quick, and our waitress was friendly. There were a couple tvs on the lower level to watch the game. Wasn't too loud of an environment. I really enjoyed the corn beef and cabbage, and the fries and curry sauce. 4 drinks, an appetizer, and an meal set me back about $40 and it was definitely worth it. Didn't seem like a family environment, just a nice lounge. Definitely check it out if you're looking for relaxed evening.

I can't believe this neighborhood gem has only 3.5 stars. McGinty's is much better than it needs to be and is an underrated culinary hot spot in Silver Spring. I've been here for dinner and brunch, and the food and service are both outstanding. Brunch: if you like pancakes, you'll be transported by these thick, fluffy rounds. Some of the best cakes I've had, with or without toppings such as lime maple syrup. If savory is your style, you'll swoon over the kale-mushroom omelet with its firm rounds of mozzerella and its crisp, seasoned greens. The potatoes on the side are pan-fried to perfection, with more flavor than breakfast potatoes have a right to possess. Brunch here is a leisurely experience: you can sip coffee for hours at a wooden booth, attended by the warm Irish staff. Dinner: Scrumptious salads, savory soups, lots of vegetarian offerings (try the chickpea burger--creative and delicious), and yummy desserts. Plus, Guinness and real Irish bread if you ask for it. McGinty's is the greatest whether you want to have a breakfast chat with friends or enjoy the Tuesday night Irish jam.

A pleasant surprise. Lunch with a friend. $8.95 lunch included a salad and entree. It was so nice to see a lunch that was not a huge pile of food. Wonderful side salad of beets, carrots, beans and ricotta cheese with a balsamic dressing. I loved this! Entree: butternut squash lasagna that was delightful. If they can only find a way to lessen the sodium. When you have limited the sodium in your diet, you are more aware of too much sodium. If you pile on the salt, you probably won't notice it. I live in Arlington. mcGinty's is too far to travel for food. If you are in the area though, it's worth a visit.

Not sure why this place doesn't have a better rating... I met some friends here - one kid in tow. The food was great. My friends suggested it and I was skeptical.... On the table we had soup, which my father raved about (and he's a pain in the arse with food), corned beef and cabbage (delicious!), banggers and mash (reported to be very good) and shepherds pie (also reported to be very good). We also had chicken wings and hummus - both very good as well. In addition to the draft beer selection is what you would expect - and they had Murphy's on tap!!!

Love this place, awesome food and drink specials daily, even though they are just mini main dishes they are very filling. I would highly recommend this place to anyone in or visiting the area looking for good food and friendly staff, both times I have been Hopper one of the staff members was very attentive offering great food as drink suggestions. Keep Up the great work and maybe put a roast dinner on the menu. :)

I've been to McGinty's plenty of times since it opened, for drinks, lunch, dinner and office holiday parties. The place has three main rooms including the bar downstairs (which is the first thing you see), a large room upstairs that can accommodate groups and has a huge bar, plus a more formal dining room, also upstairs. The food is very good and the owner runs a tight ship. Most people think "pub" and conjure a smaller place with Irish "bar food" which they have downstairs, but really this place goes far beyond that and really has a great menu in the dining room, including a decent wine list. I've never been disappointed in McGinty's. And, there are actual Irish people there.

My sister and I came for lunch back in February in the late afternoon. We are not on speaking terms at the moment so I have to hold on to that nice lunch, which is why I gave five stars. It had just the right amount of noise and life. My sister had come down to visit my mother, who is in hospice care at a nursing home. My sister has recently lost a son to a drug overdose and other things, so our family has been through a lot. All in all, our relationship just couldn't sustain the grief and the new normal. Anyway, we both had burgers, fries and green salad. The burgers were the best ever, cooked exactly right for medium rare; the fries were addicting, but to my credit, I did not eat very many. The green salad may have been watercress or something peppery like that. It's amazing how a simple green salad can elevate one's spirit, not to mention the gin and tonics and wine. We needed that. The service was excellent and again, the atmosphere was just what the doctor ordered.

I always came here because they had Strongbow on tap--a rarity outside of the U.K. At happy hour recently, however, I was disappointed to discover that they don't sell Strongbow anymore, draught or bottled! Magner's is now on tap, and although I enjoyed it bottled, I feel like it has a funky aftertaste while on tap. I'll still come here, but kind of disappointing.

Well, it's a bar, they serve alcohol and bar food. It's a bit larger than most bars and you can sit outside, or dine inside. The 2nd floor is deceptively large so that was good. Not the fastest service even if you sat at the bar but they do an ok job. The TVs are a bit small so good luck if you came there to watch and go have drinks, if you are not in front of the TVs you may as well pop your phone or tablet and watch there. It's really not as bad as that sounds but I guess this place has more potential. There is the occasional bar games thing and the host does a decent job... If you like old school bingo. Atmosphere is busy, haven't seen anyone get wasted and cause problems, so I'd put it in my list of 'grab some beers' places to go.

  • Ritzie C.

McGinty's is ... boring. The food is meh. The atmosphere is meh. And somehow even the drinks seem to be ... meh. Most weekends they have live entertainment upstairs, and the bands don't suck. But McGinty's can't get butts in the seats if they paid people to show up. So you'll find yourself watching a pretty decent band with some wrecked-faced middle aged drunks shaking it on the dancefloor ... all 3 of them. Then you'll look at the other 5 people in the room, trying to decide if you should all be embarrassed of the people dancing, or embarrassed with yourselves, for being one of the few people who paid cover to be there. So why 3 stars instead of 2? Well, when it's 11pm early in the week (cough, last night) and you just want some beer, McGinty's is close by and open til 1am. Sure the crowd is questionable and no one there ever seems to "belong", but by golly, it's open! And that's good enough for me.

Best salads ever, much to my surprise and delight. And all the food is excellent. They just need to be a little better about indoor seating. Sometimes there is no table service upstairs in the dining room, and you don't want to eat dinner in the loud bar. And sometimes they offer bread, sometimes not. Other than that, great place!

This place is not the place to come if you have the munchies, but it is the place to come if you are trying to fill yourself to the rim before hitting the next bar. The meals are hearty as they come, the service comes with a genuine smile, and the atmosphere is something I have yet to see anywhere else. Upon entering the restaurant, you are confronted with massive, wooden steps; however, there is a quaint first floor with a bar and a few single seat booths. If you are brave enough to walk up the awe provoking staircase, you will discover there is a dinning room and a bar area separate of one another although on the same level...The food is packed with flavor and the fish (from the fish and chips) is like a baby whale. There was so much corn beef and cabbage on my friend's plate, I struggled to see the plate. With this place, the service is impecable, and I will return for round two, three, four...

The food is always good, the beer is always cold. The location is great, right across from the theater. And maybe best I all, the nature of an Irish pub seems to be automatic filter for the riff raff you see in DTSS, it's just boring people in here lol.

We ended up at McGinty's on Mother's day for brunch, because the original restaurant that we had planned had a long wait. And I am glad that we did. There was no wait and as we sat there more people dropped in. The service was really good, and so was the food. I havent been to many Irish restaurants, so I have nothing to compare it to. I chose the Fix Price menu that included appetizer, entree and dessert for 20 bucks. Good deal. The dessert especially (brioche bread pudding) was delicious. My entree , corned beef hash, was good. The other diner had crabcakes, those were delicious and my hubby had the lemon pancakes, those when dipped in the ginger sauce is fabulous. All in all a good experience!

Food: The entrees have always been great, no matter what anyone picks. From the burgers to the fish dishes, everything has always been great. The boxty (an appetizer) is also good. I have been in the DC Metro area for graduate school and, of all the tasty food here, I will miss the Stew the most. Wexford Lamb Stew should get it's own ballad. It is my favorite food. Never before have I ever been heard to cry "Leave no carrot behind!" until this lamb stew. The specials have always been a little confusing. I am actually pretty sure they taste great; they are just... never Irish. It's as though the chef is trying to bring a little class to this laid-back Irish pub. I believe some of the past items have included "Squid Ink Pasta" and "Escargot". It worried me a little in the beginning . Now, I recognize it's just one of the quirks of the place. That man keeps trying and it will probably even be tasty. It just won't ever be what I'll order. I will stick with the Irish pub food and be happier than a clam. Drink: They have a great selection of beers, ciders, and liquors and the bartenders have a heavy hand. The drinks aren't terribly cheap, but you will get your money's worth. Also, this is a Coca Cola place (which is a big plus for me.) Service: The service has always been stellar. The waiters and waitresses do a great job, even when it's busy or if you're in the bar rather than the dining room (once they know you're there). I would say that the dining room service is better than the bar area, but that's common sense. The star of the show is the man (whose name I've never gotten to find out) who brings the food from the kitchen. He is always there, speeding hither and yon, making sure that everyone gets their (correct) food and gets as fast as possible while it's hot. He's awesome.

Still digging this place. with martinis under $4 for happy hour and a fun pub trivia night on mondays this is my new after work hang out! While its not a roof top, it is the best place in Silver Spring to sit outside and pass the time away while people watching. Love it!

The mussels here are amazing. White wine, coconut and curry... So good my mother boxed up the broth and took it home. When we visited on Saturday night they also had a special dessert- a cannoli. Now I know, being Italian and ordering a cannoli at an Irish pub is basically a sin. But, it was a damn good cannoli. Filled with coconut cream, with crushed pistachios on the outside and drizzled in salted caramel sauce. And for $6 we got three full sized cannolis- that's a good bargain. My husband also really liked the guiness stew, for me it wasn't nearly as good as the mussels but it's a matter of taste I think. I also tried the shepherds pie and the lamb stew, both of which were quite good. The chef even came out to talk to my mother (it's not every day an italian nonna compliments a rogue cannoli recipe, I think the chef was interested to meet her) and the service was fast and friendly. Overall, the portions are substantial the prices are reasonable and those mussels will make a grown man cry with happiness. Will definitely return.

It took me a little while to get around to writing about McGinty's Public House, but I am glad to finally do it. I am not a huge fan of Irish Pubs, but this is a nice place. I have become a regular here in the last few weeks as I went there almost every day to watch the world cup. The people who work there are nice, the food is pretty good and there is a huge selection of beer. Nice and simple place to meet some friends and have a drink and a bite to eat.

I dig their latest happy hour specials. This is the place in Silver Spring to head if you want great deals on libations and a bite to eat. (3-7 Mon.-Fri.) $5 Food Menu: Wings, Fish and Chips, Quesadilla and Chicken Tenders. I had the F&C. It was one big piece of fish and it was very good; not overly fried and the fish was tender. -$4 Cosmos, Martinis, Appletinis and Margaritas. Yes, please. I'll take two! -$3 Shocktop and Yuengling, $3.50 House Wines and $1 off rail drinks, and all other drafts and bottles. My suggestion is to head upstairs; preferably without a martini in your hands. The stairs can be a bit difficult to navigate after a drink or three. Also, if there is a rowdy group at the downstairs bar, it can be hard to hold a conversation with your friends at one of the nearby booths. It is much more peaceful upstairs, except on trivia night (Mondays @ 7 pm).

Love me some McGinty's! I've been going here regularly for Monday night pub trivia for about 3 years and go for happy hour or just to hang with friends a couple times a month. Lots of beer choices, good strong mixed drinks, and decent food for what's usually a really good price. The entrees are a little overpriced considering the quality. The place has a lot of regulars, especially for trivia, so they are clearly doing something right. I'm a vegetarian and McGinty's is one of the very few Irish pubs I've ever visited that has vegetarian options on the menu. I've even known them to go out of their way to create something for my vegan friend. Definitely check them out if you're looking for a laid back - yet not divey - bar in downtown Silver Spring.

We love mcgintys. Sometimes they have a band - upstairs can be a little loud so downstairs is best for conversation. There's a little nook in the very back that I like. Service is great. Food is good. Everything is reasonably priced. Place is clean.

An oookay spot to catch a game. There's a gigantic screen upstairs, as well as a few smaller big-screens sprinkled around for the less important (i.e. no Skins) games. Pretty tame crowd - took very little doing to be the most enthused fans there by a mile. They've got a game-day beer special, though it's only for Bud and Bud Lite, so, yeah. Also, game day food specials of lots of delightfully unhealthy bar food, like potato skins, wings and various fried things. They will not let you eat the healthier snack that you brought with you.

5 stars for the food I've had here, 3 for the service...so I guess that's about a 4 star rating. Their corned beef and cabbage is the absolute best I've ever had in my life - seriously, if you haven't tried it, you're missing out. The fish and chips is pretty good also, and the potato soup is yummy. Service is so-so (I've only been here before shows at the Fillmore)...we had one really great waitress once in the upstairs dining room who sounded like she was from Ireland herself, but we've had some no-so-great ones in the upstairs bar area. Beer selection is pretty decent also. Get the corned beef and cabbage (WITH the parsley puree stuff)...you won't regret it.

Good place for lunch. I've been there a couple of times. I've had the Fish and Chips with the Caesar salad. The Caesar salad is always good, taste fresh, the fish and chips are good, definitely worth a try. Not crowded at all for lunch. Good spot for lunch. Also if you're looking for Irish whisky they have a good selection. Anybody try this place for Happy Hour?

Just an update - we recently decided to get a bite to eat here after seeing a movie. A tuna tartare was on the menu, and it was phenomenal! For dinner, I had the club sandwich. What an amazing improvement over the previous chef's version! It was toasted, the bread was buttery without being soggy, and the Dubliner cheese was perfectly melted into the sandwich! Just an update to say they are still awesome! :-)

Two friends and I stopped here before a show at the Fillmore on 2/5, and managed to get in just as happy hour was starting and the lunch menu was in effect. The happy hour appetizers were only $5 apiece, so we got an order of wings and fish/chips. I got the volcanic wings, which were pretty sub-par. There was only a bare minimum coating of sauce, and the wings had been blasted with some kind of dry seasonings and way too much crushed red pepper. I didn't try the fish and chips, but the people I was with said it was really good...the only highlight of our visit. My two friends ordered the shepherd's pie, and both were thoroughly unimpressed. I got the pulled pork sandwich, which had virtually no flavor to it. The wait staff was courteous, but made a mess out of our order. Our waiter said he wanted to get his pen and notepad to take our order, but then opted against it and said he could memorize it all. Needless to say, when the food was served to us, there were all sorts of issues. One of the entrees was completely wrong, and my friend had to wait 15 minutes for a new entree. On top of that, the server kept insisting that the dish was correct, and we had to keep telling him no. He eventually had to confer with our waiter, so there was confusion everywhere. I got a side salad with my pulled pork sandwich, but instead, there was a bowl of soup on the plate. My friend, who wanted the soup on the side, got my salad. On top of that, my friend found a small piece of wire/metal in his soup. He told the waiter about it, and he did a little investigation on his own. When he came back, he said the chef thinks it was a broken piece from his wire scrubbing pad. The waiter apologized profusely (as awful as the food/service was, they *did* seem genuinely sorry) for the mistake, and said my friend could get a free dessert on the house. He opted for a free beer instead, and even tried for a free round of beers (there were only 3 of us), but the waiter was having none of that. The beer selection had just enough lesser-known brands to be good, but was nothing to write home about. All in all, this was a disappointment. Having just discovered the Fillmore concert venue around the corner, I envision many more trips to Silver Springs. But I won't be going here again.

The happy hour is pretty legit, and the chicken tenders are superb. The nice thing about this place is that it is huge! You can always find a seat, and the service is pretty good. But I think the location (downtown SIlver Spring) is really what makes this place nice.

I do not intend on throwing around five stars loosely on any of my reviews. A place must have every facet spot on in order to achieve such a rating. McGinty's is deserving of that privilege. I was in Silver Spring for a month working and training at a local hospital in Bethesda and I must have ate at this place at least 2 or 3 nights out of the week. Their menu has a lot to offer and there was nothing I ordered that I did not enjoy. My favorite was the corn beef and cabbage. It was unbelievably good! I also really enjoyed was the wide selection of Irish whiskeys they had available. Even more surprising was the knowledge of the bar staff had of the various beers on tap and the whiskey's they had to offer. If you have never tried Boddington's, you have got to give it a try. It is on tap with nitrous just like Guinness which really opens it up and gives it a great, light flavor. I will admit that I always sat at the bar and never was waited on by the wait staff, but the place was always busy and everyone seemed to be keeping up with the pace. The upstairs area is huge as is the bar. They have a stage set up and I listened to a variety of types of music while eating there. It's a great restaurant and pub. If you're in the Silver Spring area, it really would be a travesty to not visit it for a drink or a meal. This review is making me want to drive back to MD now...ugh..... If nothing else, go for me....

This is a long over do review. I would have given this place 4 out 5 stars two years ago but something change and it's been down hill ever sinces. The quality of the food dropped and the staff not as friendly as they once where. I saw mice often. But what I think broke the back of me ever going back happen last night 1-17-2014. I took a buddy of mine out for his 21 birthday and to celebrate his return from Air Force boot camp. The waitress refused to serve my friend because of his ID. Mind you it was a valid Maryland driver license but he hadn't updated it to the horizontal version. So the refused service some who is in the army forces and who was 21 because they didn't like the type of ID card he had. So we went to another bar around the block had a good time and no problems with the id.

I come to McGinty's for every trivia night with my friends and it's my regular date spot when meeting new guys...yet every time I'm at trivia, my friends and I sit wondering why we continue to come to this place. The food and drink happy hour specials are pretty great. But the wait staff is awful...every time. We've even tried getting served at the bar and then moving to a table to avoid this one waitress we always get. She's rude for no reason, even though we tip very well. She ignores us, rolls her eyes, you name it! Trivia is fun, but lasts WAYYYYY too long. On a good night you'll get out of there in 2 hours. But normally it lasts from 7-9:45pm...way too late for a weeknight. We have started leaving midway because we all work early next day. I've been here for several holiday events and the DJ is usually pretty good. Not a big crowd, though, which puts a little bit of a damper on things. Such a nice dance floor, they need to fill it up. Maybe smiles on the wait staff's faces will draw bigger crowds?

YELP DISCLAIMER : ******************I'm not the 'pub' type, as I hardly drink any form of ale.************* I long ago abandoned the idea of finding great Irish food, culture, or anything - since my idea of such a spot from childhood was the local Bennigan's. However, I met a friend of mine here for drinks and appetizers last week. The crab dip was pretty decent, and sufficed for a late night meal. The drinks were good too, and not weakened or 'syrup-ed' down as I might have expected. The guy on the guitar who serenaded us all night was pretty cool, too. It's too bad he really didn't know any John Mayer songs. Although his rendition of that "Hey There, Delilah" song was fantastic. I am not a pop culture follower, and I swear I never know how I know the lyrics to such songs; because my radio is never on... but, that is one of my favorite songs, and he got the notes just right. In fact, the bolder part of me wanted to get right up on stage with him and croon " Ohhh, what you do to meeeeeeee... Ohhh what you do to me....." - but, alas, I'd only ordered one drink and was way to sober to ever do that .... Anyway, the service and crowd was great and it proved for a very fun and interesting night. I'd go back if in the area...

A great pub to go with friends after a long day. Great selection of beers and mixed drinks; friendly staff; good ambiance. Don't expect restaurant quality food here, they are just a pub, but if you're hungry the selection and quality aren't bad at all. The few times I've heard live music here I've ended up leaving because it is that loud and that bad. A friend who goes regularly says the same, but maybe we've just become jaded after several bad groups in a row. If you're in SS and looking for a great place to drink with friends, definitely give it a look. If you're looking for a place to bring a date, ditto. If you're looking for somewhere to EAT, stop by one of the many local restaurants first and then stop by for something to wash it down.

BOYCOTT!!! A couple of friends and I stopped in for dinner recently. One of my friends uses a wheelchair and the host was great in taking us in the service elevator to go upstairs to eat - but when we got upstairs the servers refused to seat us because only the bar was open with high tables in it. We asked if a regular table could be moved from the closed/empty dining area on the other side of the door/wall and were told no and that we could not be seated or served. This restaurant does not know the law when it comes to the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Really awesome food. I tend to stay away from chain places and in downtown Silver Spring, this is really your only option. (Side note: there are a ton of really good ethnic places but if you're not into Ethopian or Indian then this is it) The menu is a nice mix of traditional Irish food (I once had the Irish breakfast which was only second to a version I had once in Dublin) and American pub food. This is my go to place in SS, so I've been here quite a bit. I usually get one of the specials because they are all really good. As for prices: pretty reasonable considering you are getting a decent meal. Not too expensive, and not too cheap that makes you wonder what the quality of the food is. Just a right mix. Good service too.

Nor great food. Overpriced beer, not with a extensive a collection as you would think from a Irish pub style. They do have darts and it was crowded so some people must love it.

This is decent place. The fish and chips are amazing. Everything else I have had have been pretty good. Good happy hour prices. There is seating and small bar area on the ground floor and then upstairs is a huge bar area. Finding a table has never been a problem. They seem to try to have something every night of the week. I my opinion it ranges from "I think I'll go downstairs" to "this is awesome!" Most people are in jeans, a bit more a casual place (like most of Silver Spring). Better bar than most around it (only one other bar for many blocks).

I live really close to Downtown Silver Spring and I had heard of McGuinty's but had never been there until this last weekend. I enjoy my experience. I ordered a chickpea veggie burger and I have to say it was by far the best veggie burger I have ever had (and I am always looking for a good veggie burger). The waiter was very nice, made small talk and helped me pick out a beer since I am not a big fan of beer. Side note: I sat in the bar area (first area if you enter from the mall) and had no idea there was a much nicer restaurant area that I could have sat at. So it's good to make a not that you have options for the atmosphere.

McGinty's is a hidden treasure in Silver Spring. Management and bartenders both go out of their way to make sure their customers are happy. (Side-note: the owners interview management to come directly from Ireland- how cool is that?!) The atmosphere is great- not too crowded but a great selection of people to mingle with. Those of you who live in Silver Spring- stop heading to DC during the week for happy hour. I'm guilty of doing as such when I first moved here. Come to McGinty's and I promise you won't be disappointed... and you will come back. Cheers!

Food is decent, fresh...atmosphere okay...for some reason people bring their children here at 11:00 PM, so if you were out to have a few beers and relax, probably just forget that and go somewhere else, unless you enjoy going to a bar and hearing screaming babies.

I love that this restaurant has a fairly large performance space and regular live music. I dislike that the kitchen has such problems serving milk-free food to me. Fun atmosphere, though.

Silver Spring downtown has come a long way, it's been quite sometime since I visit the downtown area. The restaurant selection was not the greatest mainly filled with franchiases but we ended up at McGinty's, it had a downstairs bar but the upstairs bar was way more spacious. The beer selection was safe but at least they had boddingtons. It was alright- it was not crowded so it was perfect for a chat.

Do NOT order the crab cake appetizer. The absolute worst crab cake I have ever had and I've had plenty. Also stay away from the spinach dip appetizer, and the drafts beers. Just order the fish and chips and call it a day.

This is a solid option, given there are few other drinking holes of the pub denomination in the near vicinity. They have a really good happy hour and a decent early bird special. The other things that deserve a shout out are the brunch options and the outdoor seating (in appropriate weather). The staff are good, they have some good options for fun and games such as a quiz night and live music. The upstairs has significantly less atmosphere than downstairs on a quiet night, but it you're looking for somewhere to sit with the kids or for a quiet chat it isn't a bad option.

Fantastic brunch. Great service. They go above and beyond to correct even the smallest mistakes. Very reasonably priced. The sticky toffee pudding is phenomenal! It illicited a round of sex noises from the table.

I brought my in-laws here last night. My mother-in-law has been in love with Irish food since they went to the country years ago. She ordered the lamb stew and just about died of happiness. Three of us had the fish and chips and were very happy. My husband had a delicious rib roast with spinach and potatoes. We all shared three desserts - the Baileys cheesecake, the creme brulee, and the bread pudding. Everything was great, but we fought over each bite of the cheesecake. The beer was plentiful and cheap. I had read reviews about bad service, but our server was attentive and the food came quickly. I will definitely be back soon.

Great food, great atmosphere, and plenty of space! Easily the best pub in town. Prices are reasonable, service is usually pretty solid, and food hasn't disappointed in the years I've been going here.

If you're trying to lay low in the midst of Ellsworth Drive, the main artery of Downtown Silver Spring, McGinty's is not a bad option. That's if you're unaware that Quarry House is literally down the street, which is cheaper and cooler. I'll pretty much only come here for one of three reasons: 1) I just saw a movie at the theater across the street. 2) I'm looking pretty busted and don't want to run into anyone I know. 3) I just saw a movie at the theater across the street and I'm looking. pretty busted and don't want to run into anyone I know. They have some decent happy hour specials and the food and service are pretty solid as well. They also have a huge 2nd floor where you can peep live performances on certain nights. I was also surprised to find that they offered more than just house wines and actually had a more vast selection then we anticipated. While I never truly seek out McGinty's, it's a chill spot to pop into if you're trying to grab a beer or some grub late night in Downtown Silver Spring.

This place is alright. Definitely worth a stop if you find yourself in Silver Spring. I would normally go to Quarry House, but popped in the other night on the way out of dinner to grab a drink. The beer selection is pretty standard for an Irish pub. They have the domestic and lites, the Harp, Guinness, Smithwick's, and one or two decent craft brews. The other night it was a Flying Dog Lager and Star Hill IPA. I've only eaten here a few times over the past couple years. Once I had the fish and chips, another time it was some shrimp and salad dealy. I don't remember much about the food, so it probably wasn't bad, but probably wasn't anything special, either. I do remember thinking the portion to size ratio for an Irish Pub was a bit skewed; the prices aren't cheap, at least after happy hour/before late night. Service has been iffy, sometimes a bit slow. But, it's local and they have live music (with a cover charge, I believe). It's definitely one of the few places I'd hang out in downtown Silver Spring.

Went for brunch today and everything they put on our table tasted amazing!! We got steak, smash potato, mini shepherd's pie, leek and potato soup, caesar salad, bread, rashers, sauteed mushrooms, sauteed kale, and crab cakes Benedict. Don't miss the 4 dollar bloody mary bar, you can make your own and they have all the fixins! Capers, olives, horseradish, onion, tomato, hot sauce, worcestershire sauce, a1 sauce, lemons and limes. AWESOME! Service was great and had fun with the darts after. Brunch here is a must!

I came for the beer. Sorry to disappoint those who wanted a rundown on the food. It smelled great and looked great traveling by. Smells like an Irish Pub from the street. Yeessss! That is a sign of a good pub. Swing dancing upstairs? Bonus. I was happy for the nice beer selection. Very sit-n-chill place in a neat little friendly area. The outdoor seating also looked very quaint. Next time? Food. STRONGBOW on tap. Win.

Just had a great brunch with delicious food and reasonably priced ($4) strong mimosas. I had the corned beef hash which was exceptional, and my girlfriend really enjoyed her Frittata. Coffee was average. Service was great too. We have been in the evenings and they have free darts which are fun and sometimes live bands. This place is way way better than you'd expect for it technically being in a mall - give it a chance. I'm told it is locally owned despite what you might assume since it's surrounded by mostly chain stuff.

Growing up in Silver Spring, I remember when the concept of "Downtown Silver Spring" was more ironic than reality. Thanks to people like Lee Development, DTSS is very much a real thing, and McGinty's arrival 5 (?) years ago was a big part of that. McGinty's is every bit a legitimate Irish pub, but really lifts the bar higher then they have to. With only Galaxy pool (egh) in the immediate area to compete for "nightlife" options, McGinty's really could get away with being a lot worse than they are. Instead they do what they do very well. Well above average pub food, a very underrated brunch, with DIY bloody Mary bar. My fiancee and I have had brunch here numerous times on Saturday/Sunday to avoid the cattle call and waiting at Eggspectation. She loves the pancakes, I love the burger (might be the best in Moco honestly). McGinty's was a welcome addition to the neighborhood, and has continued to provide high quality. One minor note- not cheap by any means, but not exorbitant either.

Best potato skins ever! They taste as if they were baked and then fried or some other equally heart clogging but marvelous technique that gets the inside cooked well and the outside crispy. They pick the most perfectly rounded potatoes then top them with real non-rubbery cheese and thick pieces of delicious bacon. I never get excited about potatoes skins but I may or may not have dreamt about them for the past 2 nights. They have cider on tap which makes me a happy woman and the $1.25 discount for happy hour makes me even happier. The downstairs is cozy, which translates to a smedium in terms of space, and seems made for people to bond over whatever game is on tv and actually chat up new folks. The upstairs is ridiculously large and great for big groups and listening to whatever live act they've booked. I caught an 80s/90s cover band here and it was great fun. I really need to become their groupie and hang out here more often.

Very big bar with a downstairs and upstairs. Like the fact that there are live performances. Spacious upstairs. Seems like it adds to the "downtown" area of Silver Spring so glad it's there.

Happy hour specials here were good ($5 for an app and $3 for Shocktop), but trivia was way too hard and long for your average trivia-going audience. Gloomy interior, looks like a good place to transform into a dancey dive after 11 pm.

What a great surprise at McGinty's last night! The Algerian chef had some of the most creative dishes I've seen in the DC-area restaurant scene and, frankly, outdid Nora where we had dinner a couple of weeks ago, and the bill was a small fraction of what we paid at Nora. We ordered two items from the daily specials: a creamy mushroom ragout with a shredded, toasted buttery filo topping. It was out of this world. The endive salad was served with a candied beet (too sweet for me) and a mound of a tasty chevre and pecan blend. The chicken liver pate was served with little pickle slices, fresh crusty hunks of white bread and radishes. And the Wexford Lamb Stew was excellent. The key at McGinty's is to venture away from the traditional pub fare -- read the menu and give this brilliant chef a chance!

Fries with curry sauce FTW! Yummerz. Also, they have some really nice ciders (bottles and on tap). Homey place in a row of complete artificiality / big box retail / chains. I've never found the service to be doting, which is fine by me because I typically come here to chat with friends I haven't seen in a while. Not sure it'd be my first choice for dinner but it's really nice for a few drinks and some tastily crafted apps in the evening.

I don't know why I'm reading so many negative reviews about this place. The only reason I personally didn't rate it 5 stars is the fact that it is kind of pricey. But it is definitely worth it. We ordered the steak, the clam stew, and a nice sandwich. All of them were cooked wonderfully, especially the steak. I've never had a steak that was well done cooked so tenderly in my life. The veggies/hash under the steak were like crack, and the presentation was WOW. Overall, this place is pretty good if you want a nice sit down meal, it is really intimate and has a good ambiance. The service was really good, I don't know what other Yelpers are talking about, because I had my water glass refilled throughout the whole meal, it never went below half.

This is a go-to lunch place for me and my friends. I haven't been for dinner yet but their Monday-Thursday lunch specials for $8.95 are great. Irish Club and Fish and Chips are highly recommended. Not a big fan of their soups but everything else I've tried has been good.

I've been to McGinty's several times. The food is usually pretty decent, and better than some of the other pubs in the area. They serve their dinner menu until 10:30pm, which means if you're in downtown Silver Spring, and want something other than Ethiopian (See my review of Addis Ababa, open until 1am), McGinty's is a good choice. After 10:30, they still serve pub grub, but it's fairly limited in variety. Now to why they got 2 stars this time: We walked in at 10:20, and the hostess made it clear that if we wanted dinner (we did), we would need to order it immediately. The bar was crowded and noisy (to be expected at 11pm in a pub), so we asked for a table. We should have taken a clue when the server responsible for that table couldn't be seen. The hostess said she'd find her, and kind of pointed us in the general direction of our table. 10:23. We hurriedly started looking through the menu, at what we hoped was the table she had meant us to sit at. At 10:25, our server sauntered over, and asked what she could get us to drink. We hadn't even opened the drink menu, and told her as much, and that we were going to be placing a dinner order before the kitchen switched over to pub grub. We would like to get that order in, and THEN worry about drinks. She grunted and looked very annoyed, and walked away. Without asking if we knew what we'd like to order for food. We did, and really didn't want to miss the cutoff. 10:28...she still hadn't come back. We were about to get up and find her or order through the bartender. She wandered over at 10:29, and asked if we were ready. We were, and had been since the last time she came over. We gave her our order. She left before we could order drinks. To make matters worse, instead of walking it directly to the order station or into the kitchen, she started cleaning off other tables. We asked her to please go enter our order as we really didn't want pub grub. She informed us rather grumpily that we had plenty of time, regardless of what the hostess had told us. Would we like drinks? Yes. That would be great. There was a giant sign on the wall that said that Shock Top was on special for $4 that night. No caveats, no "only in the bar area", just $4, from 7pm on. So I ordered one. For our first course, I ordered the Irish Onion Soup, my husband ordered mussels. His mussels were over cooked. My soup was good though. Not that it mattered to our server, she never asked. Our entrees arrived before either of us were done with our first course. I ordered skirt steak, extra rare. He ordered a black bean veggie burger. We finished up our first course while our entrees sat getting cold. Then we piled up the empty dishes to get them out of our way, and started in on our entrees. My skirt steak looked like someone had unceremoniously dumped mashed potatoes on a plate, piled spinach on top of that, and then piled thinly sliced (and thoroughly cooked) fajita meat on top. Seriously, it could have been a "haystack" in a Van Goh painting. Our server was still nowhere around, and the food runner who brought out both our first and second courses wasn't about to stick around to make sure it was OK, either. It wasn't, really, the food was meh, and we had a lot of empty, dirty dishes stacked up on the table. My Shock Top was gone. My food was salty, and there was no water on our table. She came back over half-way through our entrees to ask how we were. Since the kitchen was now in pub grub mode, I didn't want to risk sending the Florsheim strips back. She asked if I would like another drink. Duh. Salty food, no water, empty glass. My husband also requested that water be brought to the table. She walked away, the dirty dishes stayed behind. When she came back a while later, she set the glasses down, grabbed all but one (really? why leave one behind?) of the dirty dishes, and immediately walked away again. No "Is there anything else I can get for you?". We didn't see her again until she brought over the check. We immediately saw that she had charged us $5.25 for each Shock Top. not a whole lot to quibble over, just a cumulative $1.50, but still. My husband pointed out the huge sign to her. "Oh. That's just upstairs." With that, she walked away again. We took that out of her already dinged tip. Servers: I understand that your base pay is not minimum wage. I never stiff you unless you work hard to earn nothing. That being said, tipping in this country is at the customer's discretion. I have no shame in tipping you according to the service you provide. If you are annoyed to have a table, take forever, pay little attention to us, don't personally bring us our food, and are just generally rude, you should not expect a good tip. And you should expect to be yelped about. You are the representative of your restaurant to your customers. Often, you are the reason we come back. Or don't.

We have been eating at McGinty's for more than five years. The food is consistently delicious and the service is always excellent. Our server Grace was so attentive. We keep coming back because we think it's the best place to eat in downtown Silver Spring.

3.5 stars. I don't care what anyone says, McGinty's bar food is solid!! Best damn happy hour wings in the area, fogetabout it! Fish & chips and bread pudding are really good as well. The small, downstairs area is more inviting than the dining room and larger bar upstairs. Albeit quiet, there are a good amount of TVs and seats available for game day upstairs. While not spectacular, it definitely does the job.

This is a terrific restaurant. They have a full bar and generally pretty knowledgeable bartender on duty, but the real highlight is the food. The fennel salad that has appeared on occasion as a daily special is spectacular -- it should be offered more often. Most recently, three of us were there for a late dinner (yes! the kitchen stays open for post-movie dinners!) and enjoyed spectacular meals -- a spicy seafood stew, rainbow trout stuffed with crabmeat, and melt-in-your-mouth short ribs that had been taken off the bone and piled high amidst a few veggies. We have never had a bad meal -- in fact, never had a meal that was less than terrific. We've eaten in the bar as well as upstairs in the restaurant, and both were equally good (and share the same menu). One tiny complaint is that they blast the recorded music sometimes, but one can request that it be turned down and (usually) they will accommodate. More than once, I've been leaving an event at the Civic Center and had someone ask for a recommendation for a light snack or for dinner. I always recommend McGinty's with no hesitation.

I have been here a few times and always hope for better....better food....better service. It never happens. I have come to see bands here and the room is not good for sound. A very lively room that is horrible for sound! I came in recently after a show at the Fillmore and asked a waitperson if the kitchen was still open, she said yes, I asked for a couple of menus. She ignored my friend and I sitting there the rest of the night and never brought our menus. We had to go to the bar for drinks, she never once asked us if we needed anything...our answer WOULD have been A NEW WAITRESS! It was horrible. It is always horrible and the food is a joke. Nothing every other pub hasn't done and they all do it better! I would stay away from this one. The Public House # 7 in Seven Corners has much better food and atmosphere. Go there!

In general I've had decent experiences here. The beer is priced in competition with DC area bars. They have a really tasty black bean veggie burger that's made in house (not out of a box)! Besides one time (a terrible waitress), I've had average to good service from the bartenders/servers. Sometimes they have live bands, and they really need to learn to turn the volume down a bit on that. It is sooo loud in there with the live band that you can't carry on any conversation without screaming. It's just annoying. If it's nice outside (a rarity in the DMV!) they have a small outside seating area to hang out in.

TERRIBLE, NOT FAMILY FRIENDLY - MANAGER THREATENED TO CALL POLICE AFTER GIVING 50% TIP! DO NOT GO THERE! We went there to have dinner and see a band playing. We had a small child with us in a stroller. We were greeted by the staff downstairs near the entrance who said they were happy to take us w/ the baby upstairs via an elevator. Fantastic! That was just so much easier than taking the stairs. All good so far. As soon as we got upstairs, everything started turning sour. A minute or so after getting upstairs we were told "the manager" said because we have the child, we have to be in a side dining room. Were they afraid a one year old would try to order himself a beer? That was very disappointing, but we moved to the side dining room. At least we could eat dinner there and hear the music somewhat. They have these plastic battery operated fake candles on the table. The little boy picked one up and immediately someone ran over and said "the manager" said he can't play with it. It wasn't concern for the child - the fake candles don't get hot, I think they run on a watch battery. Fine we placed them out of his reach. They provided us a high chair, so we placed our order. The food came quick and was good - no problems there. Our bill was ~$50 and I gave the waiter a $25 tip. I felt bad about them having to clean up our table. The little boy had dropped some silverware and french fries on the floor. I used to work as a bus boy at a restaurant, so I know how it is & tend to be very generous. After paying we sat at the table for a while. The waiter seemed to be getting very anxious. We told him we just wanted to sit and talk and listen to the music as best we could from our table. No that wasn't going to be ok, we had to leave. I don't understand why it was such a big deal to just hang out there - esp after giving them such a generous tip. The "manager" came over and said we had to "take the child and leave". We had the stroller and several bags of kids stuff (diapers, etc) that we began packing up. We weren't leaving fast enough for them. The manager came back and said if we didn't leave now he was going to call the police! WTF??? Yes that is what happened. After some heated words we got back downstairs thru the elevator and left. It was clear it was a major problem to be at this place with the child. For a place with high chairs and booster seats this is the absolute worst treatment of customers with a child I have ever heard of. Thanks for nothing McGinty's.

Who ends up in an Irish bar on Cinco de Mayo? I had a good reason, though. I was invited to a post-48 HFP celebration there, and actually had a good time. The fish and chips were definitely on point, and I was surprised to find that it had a diverse clientele. The service was a little too relaxed for some of my colleagues' tastes, but everyone seemed to enjoy their meals.

I made the mistake of coming to this bar with a couple of friends on a Saturday night to watch a hockey game. When I left the main seating area on the 2nd floor to go to the bathroom one of the waitresses insisted that I pay the $5 cover charge to get back into the room! When I complained to the manager about this he yelled at me for causing trouble, and said that if I try to "sneak in" without paying a cover charge again I would not be welcome back there. I could not believe I was treated like this as a paying customer! I will not be patronizing this establishment again!

McGinty's has good food and a decent beer selection, but the service leaves a little to be desired. I've been once for dinner, twice for pub trivia, and once for supposed Irish music. The Irish band set up, disappeared, and then disassembled everything and left. Not sure what was going on there. The food is good--I've had the crab cake sandwich, and the buffalo wings. I tried my boyfriend's monkfish (it was a special) and that was really good too. They have good happy hour specials, but it ends at 7, which isn't very convenient for me. The servers have always been pretty much MIA every time I've been. I guess I should be used to it, but it's frustrating when you want to order another beer, or like the last time I was there, get some utensils. They could really improve on that. It may be they don't have enough people working, but really, it's quite annoying.

I have been to the McGinty's in Silver Spring a few times over the course of a few years. It would seem cool that they have live music on certain nights. But it was so loud that I couldn't hear the person across the table from me. Now my review for 3/30/13 - the time that caused me to decide to never go back to McGinty's. My girlfriend and I sat in a booth downstairs. Upstairs was loud and crowded. Our service started off great with a quick drink order. That was the last time anyone was quick with anything. Our food came out hot, but it took 25 minutes to arrive. My girlfriend wanted bbq sauce for her burger and had to wait too long just for the server to come by and check on us. Then it took another lifetime for the bbq sauce to arrive because McGinty's has the slowest runners on the planet. When she cleared the final plate, she asked if we wanted another round or if we wanted dessert. By this time we just wanted to get out of there. She delivered our check in a reasonable amount of time. This was the last time we saw her. We waited...and waited...and then dug up enough cash to cover our bill and leave. This place has nothing special to offer and the service was awful. The burger that my girlfriend ate half of was meh. However the reuben I had was good. You can get their beers anywhere else. Maybe there's something special on the menu I'm missing, but I won't be wasting my time at McGinty's anymore.

This place is no good! I am tempted to give it only 1 star. The bartenders were super slow, the waitstaff was lacking in skills as she messed up our check. The food was horrible...the decor is fake Irish cheese to the max. The place just lacks a cool factor and is borderline pathetic excuse for a theme restaurant. We sat at the bar until we moved to a table and then we ordered food which was clearly packaged and pre-made. The veggie burgers were dry and the topping was gross. They had a band that was sound checking for like 30 minutes and then when they actually played music it was enough to make us want to leave the place. I have one word to describe it and that's SAD. :( The only good thing about it was that it's actually in a fun location but I will bet you we'll never go here again.

Some Yelpers seem to think they'll find an authentic Irish pub across the street from an AMC movie theater and a Borders, and down the street from a Red Lobster. Hate to break it to you, but you have a better chance of finding a great creperie in Wasila. So, let's judge McGinity's for what it is, a nice little cas dining restaurant and bar in a really nice retail island in Silver Spring. They have some accomplishments. They have about a dozen decent beers on tap that are reasonably priced. They have a menu with some interesting items, some quite tasty. And they're one of two places in the area that have a kitchen open late (10:30pm weekdays). I had the grilled caesar salad. Romaine served whole stalk, which is a different take on it (goes with the grilling). Very flavorful and fun. Guest had the reuben, great looking meat, average bread, but they offer a side of fries or salad. Not many places give you a nice arugula salad without an upcharge. Server was terrific. Kind enough to inform us that the kitchen would be closing and that we should place orders for dessert if interested. We were not, but thanks for asking. McG's is convenient and close. That gets you three stars. Surprisingly nice food at a fair price gets four stars.

The bar tender told me there was no simple syrup in my gin and tonic. I'm allergic to gluten which is in simple syrup. He lied I got sick. Thanks for ruining my night

I was the designated driver so I can vouch for the hot chocolate, but nothing otherwise. We went on a slow Saturday night and when we lined up songs on the jukebox, we could not hear the music. Still, the service was good and I saw a bunch of people go upstairs for the live music.

Went with my boyfriend, his dad and his dad's coworker last night. It was fairly crowded for 6pm on a week night. The food was good as usual, but the service was unusually slow. I am big fan of McGinty's as it reminds me a lot of my upbringing and back home, but I will say I was disappointed in their corn beef and cabbage. The corn beef was good, very lean and tender (without being stringy), however the biggest disappointment was the cabbage. It looked and tasted more like sauerkraut than cabbage and looked unappetizing covered in the white parsley sauce that covered everything on the plate. But my boyfriend and his dad said the Shepard's pie was great. And his dad's coworker said that the haddock in the fish and chips was very good and not greasy.

They make a mean stew, fish & chips, irish breakfast plate and have a great trivia night (monday). The drinks are okay, cause you can't jack up beer... or can you... and the fare is standard pub. They have a pretty good happy hour and a consistent crowd. It's convenient and I like it. I'd recommend it, maybe not for a romantic dinner but definitely for a place to hang. Good not great.

"Meh, I've experienced better," is what Yelp offers as it's summary of a two star review. I'd say that's pretty accurate. The food is lousy, and the atmosphere is less folksy than it aspires to be, but the wait staff is consistently courteous (which in Downtown Silver Spring sets it apart). The draft list isn't anything special, but you can at least get a Heavy Seas Pale Ale or a Dogfish Head 60 Minute in addition to the ubiquitous domestic brews. It's a fine place to gather for a beer on a Thursday night or to catch a game on Sunday, but it's certainly not a destination worth driving to for any reason. If you happen to find yourself already parked in Downtown Silver Spring and you're looking to get seated right away, grab a beer, and have an unpretentious quick bite, McGinty's is fine. If you're looking to sit down and really appreciate the intermingling of flavors in an authentic Irish lamb stew, you should probably move on.

We were here for lunch while the rain fell in torrents outside. I had the deconstructed Cobb Salad and my partner had the Shepherd's Pie. The food was great! The service was pretty good -- not inattentive but not pushy - and the atmosphere was very Irish. There was a young fellow at a table nearby loudly regaling the others at his table with stories of his admirable exploits on behalf of Discovery, down the street. We drank Guinness...It made me miss the old Royal Mile, in Wheaton.

The happy hour drinks are totally worth it. I've always loved the food. Overall service is ok, but brunch is way too packed to get quick service. That being said, the brunch food is great too.

Love McGinty's! Bartenders are awesome and remember what I drink every time. Bartenders actually interact with the customers, give you a generous pour, and don't let your drink go empty. Have a good selection of beers on tap, food is ok (typical bar food). Good Sunday brunch specials - can make your own bloody mary's - and they dont stiff you on the vodka. Have live music on Thursdays too, bands are hit and miss. If its a bad band youre in for a loooong night bc the music can get really loud. The bar itself if HUGE- so if you dont want to listen to loud music stay downstairs, but if youre looking for entertainment head upstairs. They also have TV's so if you want to watch a game you can head there - but the volume for the TV's isnt on so I wouldnt consider it a "sports" bar by any means.

No where near a real Irish pub. Servers were slow and a had no idea what customer service was. They acted like they did not want tips. The tap lines tasted like they had not been cleaned in years. Food was not good. This is a place where you go for a quick beverage and move on. As I stood waiting for a drink the manger watched me yet continues to talk to the server. What manager would actually try to irritate a customer? I will not be going back. There a better Pubs in the area.

Came here for a nice brunch with friends. I didn't know what to expect, but I was please with the food. Had the Irish breakfast, which is HUGE and totally satisfying. I don't know what they put in the eggs, but they had a neat little almost minty taste to them. The pudding was perfect, and the rashers were, too. Friends had hamburgers, one with bacon, and said they enjoyed them immensely.

i thought it was a nice pub, 2 stories, great array of drinks, and great food menus. if you are having a social with a sport club, it would be a great place to hang out... it is extremely spacious, with loads of seating for a multiple medium-large sized groups of people/friends/ family

This is one of my go to places in the area. I find that after a movie at the AFI a few drinks and chatting are always in order. Its much quieter than the other nearby alternatives (like Quarry House) and if you are the sort of person who likes to sit back, have a few drinks, some pub food, and actually converse with your friends its a good spot to hit. During the winter I would suggest moving upstairs to avoid the occasional wind from the doors opening. Upstairs there is a dance floor and plenty of yuppy folks with their friends afraid to meet new people and pretending that cliques are still as cool as they were in high school. The food is what you expect, the kitchen is open late, the drinks are reasonable, and the service is polite. Nothing amazing, nothing bad. Go here, enjoy yourself and on second thought.... forget that I mentioned the back room on the first floor, I like to go there and prefer you not get there first.
